Okay, its a bit long but I am confuzzled by this:
Three ladies go into a restaurant. They order the same thing, sandwiches, cup of tea (yes they are british ladies) and a cream scone. When they have finished the waiter comes over and gives them a bill of £30. They each pay £10 and finish their tea. The waiter goes back to the cash register and realises he has over charged them. The actual bill comes to £25. He thinks for a minute and decides to pocket £2, as the three ladies couldn't divide the £5 change up equally. He returns to the table and gives them each £1 and apologises for his mistake.
(you with me so far) Here's where I am confused.
The ladies in effect paid £9 each (started off with £10 and got £1 back) and the waiter has £2. Where did the other pound go?
3 ladies x £9 = £27
Waiter £2
=£29.

Yes they started by paying £10, but then they each got £1 back, making it in effect £9.
The waiter only kept £2

Well it's actualy very simple. In school almost all math teachers will teach short math. That's why we have algebra etc. In this particular word problem, most people try to do to much math. you have to go back to the original numbers!!! 30 subtract 5 is 25. 25 plus 5 is 30. You are to forget about the other numbers. They are not important. The other numbers, when factored in just create confusion!! That's why we are always taught short math, and to only use the info that we need!!!
It's not how long it is!!! It's how ya work it!! Wink Wink

Forget what the ladies paid. The waiter had 30 pounds and gave the ladies back three which means he now has 27 which is 25 for the bill 2 for himself and 3 for the ladies. A total of 30 pounds.

The actual bill is supposed to add up to 25. The 3 persons paid 27 in the end, and the 2 pounds pocketed by the waiter, when subtracted from the 27 would give the original 25 pounds. The catch is to subtract the 2 pounds from the 27...not add it!

You have to take away the £2 the waiter took, not add it.
The overspent money was £2 + 3x£1 = £5
Then 3 ladies x £9 - Waiter £2 = £25
£25 + overspent money = £25 + £5 =£30

ACTUAL BILL=$25
EACH LADY =$09
TOTAL =$27
HENCE THEY PAID $2 EXTRA 25+2=27$
THE AMOUNT TAKEN BY WAITER MUST BE SUBTRACTED AND NOT ADDED FROM WHAT THEY PAID.
