HOW do we do it? Well, we use a telephone. :)
Its called prospecting...and its the LEAST favorite thing most sales people want to do. It can be done in various ways...here's a couple of examples.
1) Call up former customers, checking in on them to see how they like their vehicle and the sales experience. If they are satisfied, ask them if they know of anyone who might be looking for a vehicle. If they were HONESTLY satisfied with you and the vehicle, they may mention a few people. Maybe not, but...its another way to try to get and keep satisfied customers. (Proving that, its MUCH better to satisfy a customer and treat them well. Hoping that they will respect that and be your customer again.)
Then you go about telemarketing to the people they suggest.
2) Calling "orphan" customers. Meaning: The customers of a former sales rep. You introduce yourself, thank them for buying their vehicle at XYZ dealership...and tell them that you have taken over for Mr. Former Salesman...and that you were hoping they could come down so you could meet them.
3) Pick any name/number out of the phone book and make a call. Will you annoy people? Yes. Will you get hung up on? Yes. Will you make a few contacts that you didn't have before? Yes. Will you be on the phone when another salesman gets an up, and sells something? Yes.
