Yes. There is scientific evidence that vegetarians live an average 7 to 10 years longer. The reason? They have a reduced risk of almost every type of cancer, of stroke, and of heart disease.

Just look at one study for an interesting example: Scientists have studied the effects of cholesterol using laboratory rats. They fed a group of rats 100% pure cholesterol, and monitored them for symptoms of heart disease. The rats had no problems. Then they fed one group of the rats some meat along with the cholesterol. Instantly, this group of rats exhibited symptoms of heart disease. Upon studying further, it was discovered that there are effects from the meat which cause oxidation in the body, and in combination with the cholesterol intake, could trigger heart disease.

Pure vegetarians do not eat any cholesterol in the diet. This, however, is just a small part of the benefit to vegetarianism. There are many other reasons it is more healthful. Consider, for example, the health of the animals, the hormones they are given and antibiotics, etc. If you do your research, rather than listening to those who prefer to rationalize and excuse their meat eating, you will find ample proof of superior health in a balanced vegetarian diet.

It is true that too many people don't eat sufficient amounts of vegetables. To answer your question; homo sapiens have what is considered to be an omnivorous capability. Meaning, we are equipped to handle any food product with the exception of cellulose. It is quite difficult to get the necessary amount of essential amino acids, with a vegetarian dietary.

No, vegetarians don't like meat for some reason. I have one friend who is vegetarian, but he never explained to me why he doesn't eat meat.
