Personally I only use SLR cameras, so that's all I will talk about. I landed in the digital world with a Nikon Lens, so my first SLR was a Nikon. I bought the D50 and it is a fantastic camera, people cannot believe I am not a long standing professional photographer. I loved this camera so much that I ordered a Nikon D80. I only got that camera yesterday and I had a photo shoot to do last night. I took a chance and used the D80. The images are superb.
Does this mean I think Canons are rubbish? Absolutely not! Having held the 350D and 400D in my hands I prefer the feel of the Nikon, but that is personal preference. To my mind, I grudgingly admit that the Canon seems to have better sensors, but Nikon seems to have better optics. This too can come down to the specific lenses or camera body you buy.
Either way you won't go wrong at the SLR end of the market, the shots if well taken will be quite presentable. Over 50% of the considerations come down to personal preference.

Nikon or Canon? BMW or Merc?
Talking as a "prosumer" (that is, I love photography but shouldnt give up my day job), your question would be better framed by asking "what is the best value-for-money camera for doing X, Y, and Z ... and who gives the best after-buy support?"
>>>> speaking as a prosumer who has used Canon, Pentax, and Ricoh over the years (but not Nikon) ... my preference is Canon with Pentax a very close second. I have a number of friends who swear by Nikon, so I think its a question of "test driving" your short-list. Try them both, get the feel, feel good about the appearance, try some quick fire shots etc etc.
>>>> the ONLY tip I would give you is save enough $$$ to get into the Digital SLR market. The Canon and Nikon DSLRs are so good that you will never go back to a point-and-shoot.

These two cameras are both head to head, practically there is no difference between them. But in fact of lenses, the Canon ones are better then those of Nikon. There is the feeling though, that Nikon is more user friendly than a Canon one.

I bought a Nikon slr 35mm 25 years ago; still works perfect. Every now and then needs new battery. Both Canon and Nikon make excellent digital cameras. You can add Sony and Olympus also. It really depends what you're looking for in a camera; comparing features and price.

I myself am a die-hard user of Nikon SLRs', however, In my opinion Canon scores better than Nikon in terms of technology. Canon optics are also better than Nikon's.
Canon holds more patents than Nikon does in photographic technology.

Which is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus? Nikon or Canon? These are all unanswerable questions as they are all "the best" in their class, depending who you ask.
If you have no personal preference, perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

Nikon never screw over photographers by change their lens mount like Canon did when they went to Auto Focus. So I'll have to go with Nikon.

Not a very good question. It'll be better if you give us a few specific models that you want to compare with.
In general, Canon is more popular in the point and shoot market compare with Nikon (thanks to Canon's marketing department). However, once it comes to DSLR, they are really neck to neck. I guess no one can really say which one is better as both of them make high quality DSLR.

To be trustworthy, somebody asks this question a week and that they continuously get a similar solutions. I grew up shooting the two and that i think of the two are large. each and every physique has a private decision. because of the fact I grew up shooting Nikons, I nonetheless shoot Nikon instruction manual bodies and lenses for movie initiatives because of the fact i've got used that kit for 25 years and it particularly is totally normally happening to me in specific circumstances I carry my old Nikons merely because of the fact they are easier, smaller and lighter than maximum DSLRs. yet as quickly as I shoot digital, i'm presently shooting Canon. i've got theory approximately moving over to Nikon on occasion yet, there is particularly no compelling reason to alter. i'm going to have long previous Nikon as quickly as I went digital yet, that meant paying an added $six hundred for a D300 on the time to get finished application of my instruction manual lenses. rather, I went with a Canon 40D rather because of the fact I had get entry to to extra Canon autofocus lenses than I did Nikon on the time and it exchange into $six hundred extra low-priced as observed. you are able to come to a distinctive end for various motives. What i will permit you realize is that neither is inherently extra effective than the different. Canon and Nikon are the marketplace leaders and have been for over 2 an prolonged time. there are circumstances that one would leapfrog the different in one or extra factors yet, overall they proceed to be equals. as an occasion, Canon offered extra effective extreme ISO overall performance and extra effective autofocus each and each of ways by 2007. Their 20D and it particularly is successors enormously plenty defined the "professional-sumer" digital camera marketplace from 2002 to 2007. yet in late 2007, Nikon made extensive advancements in image high quality and autofocus whilst they presented the D3 and D300. Canon has had to catch up in those factors for the reason that then and Nikon's completed an impressive job of advertising to the get entry to-point DSLR crowd. Canon has ultimately began catching up back with the insurrection T1i, 5D Mark II and the recent 7D. And now there's a clean 1D on the way too. opposition is a sturdy factor. My advice is which you decide on cameras from the two manufacturers that meet your desires. bypass to a digital camera keep and take a verify out the two cameras. See that's least confusing on your to apply and bypass with it. Neither Canon nor Nikon is a foul decision.

its really hard to say , its like asking bmw or mercedes? ragu or prego. there both top notch. but as in the instance of bmw or mercedes bmw is for a person who wants a drivers car, something to whip through a canyon road and still exemplify a bench mark in automotive world , whereas a mercedes is truly the pinnicle of the luxury world, with no rivals, mercedes is also a bench mark but in another aspect . you need to asses the things that you will be photographing then make a decision, i have had both cameras and i would have to say i was equally impressed there really is no right answer as to which camera is better, but only you can answer which camera is suits you better!
