The most important ingredient of a good pina colada is the Coco Lopez mix. It is a high quality mix and can be stored (since it comes in a can) for a long time. Use a high quality rum that you like and filtered water ice cubes (maybe a bit too anal but it DOES make a difference) Use 100% pineapple juice if you want to thin it a little.

I used to be a bartender at a beach bar in St Petersburg beach, FL and this is how we made them. yummy!
In a blender, for a frozen pina colada.
fill 3/4 full of ice. Add rum, coco lopez, crushed pinapple and vanilla ice cream. blend. Use pinapple juice to bring to the right consistency adding more ice cubes if needed. May also use half and half in place of the ice cream. I don't know the exact amounts of each because we were so busy we just used the 'dump' method. dump it in and blend it up! Garnish with pinapple slice and cherry on a toothpick. You can be creative with the kind of rum you use but I always liked the taste of white rum the best.
If you are making a pina colada on the rocks you use rum, cocoa lopez, pinapple juice and half and half. Shake well and pour over ice, or blend in blender without ice and pour over ice.
Garnish.
