Have a look here: http://webexhibits.org/colorart/vinci.html Chiaroscuro, as you probably know, is Italian for lightdark and is defined as a bold contrast between light and dark. Study the light and dark effects shown in the Leonardo da Vinci’s Chiaroscuro link above. You could then try painting a similar effect, but using a modern day model.

The best possible way to learn how to use any technique at all is to study the masters.

To my mind, the masters of the art of chiaroscuro were Caravaggio, Rembrandt and de la Tour.
