Have they had to repair some of the original works by Giotto and Cimabue?

Tempera paint itself resists cracking when applied in slow, thin layers as the masters (and Giotto) did. The support that was painted on (wood usually) sometimes moved and split over time and transferred cracking to the tempera painting.

Repair, yes. There is other damage that can happen to paintings other than cracking such as dirt and smoke damage. Ultraviolet light fading colors and changing others. Etc. If cracking did occur, little can be done to reverse the cracking. Instead, steps are taken to stabilize the support to ensure no further cracking happens.

I think yes.. Usually with tempera it depends of the ground. The big mistake of Leonardo "Last Supper" in Milano was, the vet ground, or seeking different kind of other ground possibility.
