Firstly, I would put various substances out of reach to the child. Secondly, the child might have a mineral deficiency if he/ she is craving unusual things.

However, it is common for young children to want to explore things with their mouths..that is how the very young first discover their world.

First of all the toothpaste and other similar things should not be in a place where the child can get it himself. You can also talk to him about how he shouldn't eat it because it will make him sick, but mainly with young children it's all about keeping it out of reach.

Talk with them about the dangers (or no-no depends on age), put the items up beyond the childs reach, talk with their doctor (could be a lack of something in diet) and use non flouride toothpaste for child (safe to ingest)

Children may eat things they are not supposed to as a subconscious effort to look for vitamins their diet is missing. I would start a daily vitamin right away. Pregnant women are known to eat dirt and ice chips when their vitamin levels are low.. odd right!?

Depending on the child's age.. that may be the problem. If it is a very young child, they may just be exploring. Child proof the house and put that stuff up. My daughter used to like the ornaments on the tree and ended up in the ER with a cut up mouth. It only happened twice. Once at my house, once at the babysitter. We put the things up. Do the same... put the stuff away.

I also would suggest getting the number for poison control and putting it on your fridge for easy reference... just in case.

Wait til he/she squirts shaving cream up their nose.. that's even more fun!

We humans are animals. Little humans forage... you can train kids to eat anything really. Solution is to child-proof your home and keep out-of-reach items you don't want them to put in their mouth.

Make them drink a bottle of hot sause till their sick and throwing up. Then tell them if they ever eat something again that they're not supposed too, you're going to beat the spit out of them.
