Have you ever tried looking at a Life Application Bible? It really helps to apply the Bible to our lives today.
Just use common sense with this verse. It means not to talk about foolish things like whether it would be cool or not to stick your finger in a light socket or jokes that are crude and insulting. It's talking about not wasting the precious time we have on this planet doing and talking about dumb things or sinful things or things that hurt others. God didn't give us this life to be subhuman and degrade ourselves or others. He also then asks us to talk about and be thankful for what you have, and what you know, what you are and what you can be.
It's all about always heading uphill as best you can, no wasting time on the dumb stuff, OK?
Hope this helps a little..........God Bless YOU!

You should give enough for context. He is describing how to behave in public. It is similar to what a company would expect of its representatives.

1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know,[a] that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.

If regular bathing was common back then it likely would have been mentioned too.

No. it just means you should be real. I take that to mean that obscenity isn't really necessary. Or "foolish talk" like lying/making up stories. And course joking, as in teasing or picking on someone, being mean for no reason.

If a person can't talk about anything else, but "obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking," Then maybe it is good that they are silent, both for themselves and their company.

there is plenty to talk about without being obscene or coarse. it's ok to joke as long as all know it's a joke and it's not dirty. We can carry on conversation without being ugly.

This doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk at all. It's completely possible to talk about things without using obscenity, foolishness, or inappropriate jokes.

This is instructions on how to glorify God. The chapter goes on to tell us what to say in order to do that:

19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

While we are not necessarily expected to talk about the Lord with our mouths all the time, we are instructed to have grateful hearts and know that He is with us at all times. This is for our own good!

you have to see the whole context of which the verse is used in, it is instructions on how to be God's people. rather than not speaking at all, our words should reflect what we believe. this could mean quit cussing or speak in a profane manner. hope this helps.

In the morning I often pray these words from the Bible. Not sure what chapter and verse. "Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in Your sight" today, in Jesus name I pray. Amen.
