My boys always liked Sesame Street. It is on several times a day now if you have cable. Then Blues Clues, Dora, there are so many that are geared toward learning. If she likes music The Wiggles and Little Einstiens are pretty good. And many that are purely for entertanment are still working on concepts like lying or sharing or kindness.
For me the biggest thing I look for is to be sure the kids aren't being taught the wrong thing. Some of the cartoons out there today have really smart mouthed characters, or they are cute but are handling "problems" that younger kids don't handle (girlfriends etc). I would just watch your daughter and see how she is reacting to it.
A little off topic, there are also alot of computer games with favorite characters or Leap Pad or Vsmile type products geared toward her age that she may enjoy instead of just watching she can participate. Also I would encourage imaginative play (dress up, pretend kitchen, act out a story etc. At this age it is really important and it seems like with my boys some of their friends had no idea what this was about. They had mostly spent time watching TV and playing electronic toys and didn't know how to pretend. Good Luck!!

Sesame Street
Blues Clues
Shows on Noggin
The Wiggles
Dora the Explorer
All of these programs have ways of educating children and keeping them entertained at the same time. Children learn from example, so sitting down with your children and reading and playing games helps them to learn as well.

There are alot of great kids programs out there. It depends on what they are interested in too. I would think that Teletubbies would be a bit too young for her. But the Baby Einstein collection is great and covers alot of different topics. Blues Clues is another great one that helps with alot of skills. Sesame Street is another. Dora the Explorer is good for teaching skills along with a foreign language. My 2 1/2 year old loves Thomas the Tank Engine. There is also a line of videos done by Fisher Price called The Little People. We have a couple of tapes of those and they are great. But, like everything, tv and videos should be limited and supplemented by good play with you and with play groups and such to build social skills. Watching too much tv isn't good for them at any age. Good luck.

Hi,
My 18 month twin boys LOVE The Wiggles, Baby Einstein & Raggs!
We have about 1-1/2 hours of tv time a day (split up) and we dance to The Wiggles or Raggs or point out the animals and babies on one of their Baby Einstein DVDs.
I try to incorporate what we've watched into other activities during th day ie mimic monkies, elephants or other animal sounds, do monkey dances, read zoo books and point out the different elephants, eat fruit salad together with me asking where's the banana, apple etc
I know people say babies/kids shouldn't watch tv but I disagree I feel that with correct supervision and minimal viewing it can be educational. We introduced our boys to Baby Einstein at around 3 months and everyone commented on how alert and bright eyed they were .... I think if a parent uses TV programs wisely it can be educating and stimulating to the child and a great parent/child interaction tool.
Kind Regards,
Twinsanely Happy!!!

My daughter will be 9 months old on Dec 5th, but this is an issue I am interested in. I do not like watching much TV myself, and mostly I prefer to watch movies. However, my girlfriend (baby's mother) is a true couch potato and likes watching soaps, Jerry Springer and Judge this and that -ARGH! ;) As for our daughter, we have BabyTV on Dish Network, which she (our daughter) enjoys, and she has several show she prefers over others. As she gets older, I hope she prefers the educational programming of PBS or other educational TV stations such as Discover, TLC, etc.

TV should be kept at a minimum but if they must watch TV, I would go with Sesame Street, there is nothing that comes close to it in terms of education or entertainment.

Stick to PBS shows (Sesame Street, Arthur, Barney, etc.) for as long as you can with your daughter. My oldest child (a girl) did not know about commercial television until she was in school and it was for the best. The entertainment is educational, fun and without the constant bombardment of toys, kids music videos, and various fast food ads.

Get her a Leap Pad,Baby Einstein dvd's and such. My daughter is 1 and 2 months and that's what she watches. Barney, even though I dislike him is very helpful. Dora The Explorer is,too. There are lots of educational programs on Discovery Kids channel. Those are just a few options.

Sesame Street. Educational and entertaining. And unlike most children's programming it's watchable by adults.

None. Children shouldn't watch TV before 6 years old, and studies have proven that TV does NOT make them any smarter (including educational programs) and that it actually dulls their creativity. What she needs to be "educated" is to play--especially with you interacting with her--that's how children learn.
