he's not growling "around you"...he's growling AT you. this is a sign of extreme dominance from a dog. they do that when another "dog" is in their space. he's telling you that you are "beneath" him and doesn't want you touching him unless it's on his terms only. this is a leadership problem. consult a trainer or dog behaviorist to help you address this situation before he ends up biting someone badly. it won't get better on it's own, and will only escalate into more aggression. you see, aggression starts out as little looks, body language signals, growls, snarls, and eventually bites. please get help soon and you both will be much happier.

he's growling AT you. if you spoil him, he probably doesn't have much respect for you, and if he doesn't like to be picked up, growling at you is his way of trying to get you to put him down. if he doesn't growl at other people for doing this, that will be because he's not sure if he's the boss of them yet. whether this is the case or not, never allow your dog to growl at you or other people or other dogs. left unchecked, it will escalate into aggressive behavior as they get older. and in doggy etiquette, it's just rude and unecessary unless it's in play or warning.

my yorkie does a simialr thing....when I look at her to pick her up, she looks at the other dogs and if they appear to look at me, she starts a fight with them. my maltese is good natured and doesn't hurt her, but can get her down and she never learns, she will do it again the next day. I think it's just a jealous behavior, as if, this is my mom, leave her alone......

He growls when you are holding him because he feels safe and confident enough to growl at something. Otherwise, he is to afraid. It is the same reason that my dog would bark like crazy at other dogs from the safety of my car.

Every suggestion so far MIGHT be correct; only a trainer can tell you for sure. Get you and your dog to a reputable trainer, have them observe the behavior, and get their opinion.

I don't know, but is it possible that you are reinforcing this growling behavior by stroking your dog while he growls?

He is showing you he will protect you. He is saying "back off this is MY human."

You gotta love those little dogs, they have the hearts of lions.

Maybe he has a discomfort that you aggravate when you pick him up
