This is quite normal behaviour. Kittens don't often stay still long enough for the older cat to finish grooming them, and the older cat bites lightly to tell the kitten "don't move, dammit". It's not bad, and considering your older kitten shows otherwise such maternal behaviour as cleaning the little one, I doubt you need to worry that the small one will be hurt.

There is a lot of loose skin at the back of the neck of a kitten or cat. That is for the momcat to pick up the kitten and move it. The older kitten is playing momcat and grooming babycat. This is hardwired into the cats brain (groom yourself and anything smaller.) Cats like everybody to smell alike. They will probably be fast friends.

I'm guessing that you aren't very familiar with multiple cats! Yes it is normal for an older cat to groom a younger one. As for her biting the younger one, just keep an eye on them. I doubt that the 5 month old is trying to hurt the 6 wk old, but she could do so unintentionally. I have 5 cats ranging in ages from 3 months to 14 years old. I have seen them do many crazy and odd things. Good luck!

Hi, The older cat is just being maternal. She is grooming the little one. As for her grabbing her by the neck, that is the way the mother cats carry their young. She may also just be playing with the smaller kitten. I wouldn't worry about them. The little one will grow fast and soon they will be frolicking and playing together.

Your older cat has accepted the young'in, she's just being "motherly". My 2 kitties are the same. The older one loves to nip the younger one around the neck and uses her front teeth to "scratch" the young one's neck, then licks her all over....of course the younger one enjoys the attention throughly! :D
