Uh .. 30.. i dont know how really help you but i try to not say "everything will be allright" not saying its bad to say i used to say it too.but when i got it back to me when i had hard tiem i thougth to myslef.. "how the ... do you know that? u dont know how i feel or how it will be.." thats what i fett b/c of depression and sadnes..
my suggestion would be talk it out, talk about best memories, of their relationship but mostly u say nothing u just listen leave the talking up to him it will free his mind and help him if hes not ready wit for another time, or just try to make him to talk it out when ur in quiet peaceful private place by saying "he must been great person.." see if he picks it up and goes from there. thats all i can suggest.

damn - where does a thirty year old go to hook up with 18 year olds?
look, his uncle died. it sucks, but its part of life, let him be depressed for a while, just give him comfort...if he cant handle it, then, well then hes just not mature. which, you know, maybe why he cant get a girl within a decade of his own age.

Just be there for him, Sweetie. It'll be a lot easier for him if he knows that you're feelin with and for him
