do Islamic countries have laws that call for killing of apostates (those that leave Islam) EVEN IN THE PRESENT AGE.

See the other side - While Islam gladly accepts apostates from other religions, what will happen if other religions also impose the same laws ie. kill all who convert to Islam. Will this not lead to a full scale religious war.

wichita- you are basing your argument from the perspective of a muslim. Just replace the word "muslim" with "Christain" or "hindu" & see what you get.

explicit- the Islamic law calling for death to apostates is not based on the whim of governments but on what has been written in the Quran, hadith & on the actions of Mohammad.

dear bro abdelghan - I started by reading about Islam (quran, hadees & life of Mohammad) in a positive sense but have now ended up being critical of it. Here we are not talking of converts but about those who have been born into the religion.
As you are well aware, all the major schools of Islam prescribe death for such apostates. It follows therefore that there is no concept of free choice in Islam.

This is what Sahih Bukhari has to say:
Volume 9, Book 84, Number 57:
Narrated 'Ikrima:
Some Zanadiqa (atheists) were brought to 'Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn 'Abbas who said, "If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's Apostle forbade it, saying, 'Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire).' I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'"

Brother abdelghan -I do not know about christianity but if it is the same with christianity then christianity is wrong also.
However please read my question - it is for punishments being imposed IN THE PRESENT AGE and not what is written in the texts.

There is also the issue of critical literature. The English citizen who authored a critical book on Islam had a 'hit' put on him by Islamic authorities and fellow Englishman and Islamic Convert Cat Stevens concurred with the concept of putting that author to death for what he wrote.

If Christians put hits on writers critical of Christianity, they're be a lot of dead writers in the world, but Christians don't even consider doing such things!

uh, I beleive we ARE in a religious war. It may be a peaceful religion, but those that interpret it in an evil way are the ones that make it awful. ALso, it is a way of life, not just what they do on Sunday, as is religion in the US. Many msulims are brainwashed into thinking everyone else is evil and must be killed. And the danger is, that they don't worry about death themselves, they feel it is a better afterlife,.. this makes them a dangerous bunch!

Actually all religion, no matter Islam, Christian, Buddhism, etc are religion of peace. No religion in this world teaches you to kill people. But some of the people make use of the name of religion when they did a crime (whether to climb up the political ladder, take revenge on others, etc).

If one person in a family does something wrong, it doesn't mean the whole family is bad, isn't it? So it's not the religion that's violent. It's some of the people that does the crime and now people thinks that the religion itself is bad. We shouldn't over-generalize.

Islam belief is kind of an oxymoron! don't you think? to say it is a peacefull religion, yet, condones death to the infidal,(non believer).
God said,"thou shalt not kill!" God didn't put a clause at the end of that statement, saying, "unless others don't have the Islam belief." Just my opinion,of course. But you can go to many web sites to look up the Islam religion and find out what they believe.

It is comming and then the athiests will take over and keep the peace by helping all the remaining fanatics to understand that religion is all about population control and bedtime stories. Reality is much more finite...we live until we die and then nobody knows what happens after that.

Killing in every religion is bad and forbidden, but some religious leaders want to control other people, even with terror and wanton killings and so advice their naive followers to go out and Kill and get a place in Heaven or in Washington DC.

There is only one religion associated with Violence.

all the muslims are descendantes of or 'apostates' themselves!? Islam exist only for the past 14 centuries. It's a religion grown in the recent past by bloodshed! then no wonder that they are glad to accept the 'apostates'. till recent times there were imams calling freely and in public in UK, to slaughter the non muslims.

Dear Brother

Islam is really the religion of peace.....just read it with a non biased sense....

In islam it is your choice to be a muslim or not ....".who wants to be a beliver can be a believr and who ants to disbelive can disbelieve"

You are free to enter islam or not .......but once you have entered islam ......it is not allowed to get back........

and it is the same with christianity.......just read well...

islam wants to govern the country and is not satisfied with the borders of the religion,it is an ideology and it has an programme for the people it governs, when it comes to a power it has lots of rules and programmes for the country,as all the political groups it includes so many groups who try for the benefits of themselves, one group asks for the killing of apostates and the other asks for the killing of the women who show the hair to the men,one group works for being reach by using the power of the government and the other tries to be reach in heaven by just praying and praying, sometimes the way of going to heaven may be the killing of innocent people, sometimes just loving and helping them without minding their religion, nationality etc, anyway islam is not something homogeneous and becouse it interferes in all sides of the life as economy, law, marriage, education,it looks like political party feeded from the islamic ideology, the problem is in islam's insist in becoming a managing position, religion must be something just inviting people to the moral principles and remind them to think about the reasons of their living in the world,in addition all the muslims must think for their being so poor in this world while their leaders are so rich and all the citizen of the rich countries must think about their leaders guilt in this poverty who are elected by them,a person himself may not be guilty directly but electing the politicians who have secret relationship and secret connections with the dictators of the poor countries for their own benefits may be one of the reasons of this world which is ready for religious war.

In my country, which is Islamic, there is no such law.
You are right that there is no such law among other religions, but don't Muslims and Muslim converts get discriminated and become outcast? sometimes that's even worse than killing if you think about it.
