No language can be learnt easily, unless you have talent. Especially if you're not Asian. The characters are not easy to learn and every language requires time. Plus, there's no mandarin language, it's just Mandarin, or Putonghua, as some like to put it. Though I guess if you listen more to the language and stick around to Chinese who speak it often, and of course, you'll have to get someone to teach you. Mind you, there's traditional and somplified Chinese. People from Mainland China use simplified Chinese, so don't just go down the hallway asking any Chinese, because they may come from Hong Kong. Though I am from Hong Kong, I'm okay familiar with the simplified version of writing and anyway, I can just change it in Microsoft Word. Any questions you may have, feel free to ask me. Just E- mail me.

the difficult thing with Mandarin is that this language has tons and the writting follows special codes. So using only books will not be enough because they can't help you pronouce and tell you when you are worng. It is the same with the way you'll write a caracter as every stroke has an order.
So I would tell you to try to find a teacher, a Chinese student for instance. You can help him study English and you'll learn Mandarin from him or her. That's the best way. After the next step is to come here to China to learn more.

First, there is no such thing as an easy language to learn. Even Esperanto ( a constructed language, designed to be easier to learn than any other) has it's difficulties and would take about a year of daily study to become fluent.
But, here's the free online MP3 based course I used to learn Mandarin.
http://www.chinesepod.com is an online mandarin course for English speakers.

I don't think there's any easy way to learn a new language.
I would recommend purchasing Rosetta Stone software. It is the best I have found in attempting to learn Spanish. It is more expensive than other software, but I believe it is worth the money.
Good luck!
