ok this is hard for me to do, but i need to find out how to find a home for a german shepard that i got for my dad over a year ago. at that time he was a puppy and now he has grown and my elderly father can not handle the dog and i sure cant (have tried). he's name is Bullet and he is a sweetie, he and my dog are great friends but there is no way i can keep him. and I am afraid if i dont find a place soon my dad or mom will just take him off somewhere cause he has started to get out of the 4foot fence by climbing/jumping. and my dad at 67 and having heart problems isnt in good enough shape to go chasing after him day and night. Bullet just needs someone who is willing to spend time with him and is ok with how active he is. I do have pictures and anyone can email me telling me what to do, all advice is greatly greatly appreciated. i live in Northern Louisiana if that helps anyone know anything. I have tried a shelter here but got no response from then when i asked for help.

well just for starters, Bullet isnt purebreed i dont think even though the guy said he was, and if everyone went to a certain type of breeder what would happen to all the other puppies they are just as important no matter how the parents were breed and how they got here, that is like saying all mixed marriges produce the wrong type of kids and i got news that isnt true at all, every pet needs a good home. and my dad was with me when i bought Bullet, if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything at all, or at least make sure it doesnt just make you look like a racist against shelter or mixed puppies or puppies born on accident. and not all people can afford a purebreed these days.

This organization is near you, and will be careful that the dog is placed in the right home. They will have him in a foster home while he is being trained, and then screen carefully any adopting family.. I think it would be your best bet> http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/nlgsdrescue.html
This way he won't be put in a cage, and just have to wait around for someone to take a liking to him..

EDIT Here is a list of rescues in your area, with phone numbers..Be sure to find one that uses foster care/training, rather a humane society where they are just kenneled > http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi

Craig's list is a terrible idea. You'll get all kinds of loonies who just want a GSD to abuse.

If this dog is a purebred, contact GSD rescue.

and

Remind your parents that if they dump the dog someplace that's not a shelter, it is illegal, immoral, and unethical.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you didn't buy from a good breeder as no ethical breeder will sell a dog as a gift, so returning the dog to the breeder is probably out. One of the many problems with backyard breeders is that they wash their hands of a dog once your check clears. A good breeder, on the other hand, is responsible for that dog for life. It's in the contract.

I know that you are trying to help Bullet, but I hope this is also a lesson to many people. Dogs should not be bought as gifts and only reputable breeders should be used. I'm sorry that the dog has to go through this, but I can't help to shake my head at the whole messy situation. Good luck to you and I hope that you are able to place the dog.

Edit: A little defensive, aren't we? lol. Actually, if people only bought from responsible breeders rather than crappy breeders, there wouldn't be a shelter problem. It has nothing to do with purebred vs. mixed breed. It has to do with unethical breeders vs. responsible breeders. You made the mistake of paying a crappy breeder for a mixed breed dog and took no precautions on what would happen to the dog if your GF couldn't care for it. Now, you are stuck with a dog that no one wants and that will probably end up in a shelter. Nice job.

If everyone went to a certain type of breeder, then there wouldn't be crappy breeders now, would there? If people didn't buy Hyundais, they wouldn't make them anymore, would they? See, if there is no demand for dogs from crappy breeders, then they wouldn't breed their dogs. And there is no excuse for "accidents". Anyone not responsible enough to fix their dog does not have my sympathy. My sympathy lies with the 5 million animals killed in shelters because of crappy breeders and "accidents".

Even if you had rescued a pup from a no-kill shelter, at least then you'd be able to give the dog back to *them*.

And if you can't afford to but from a responsible breeder, then you can't afford a dog. Caring for an animal is a privlege and a responsibility, not a right. To not think about the consequences is immoral.

DO NOT put the dog in a shelter,,you will find a home,,people love shephards.Just place an ad in the paper or ask friends to ask friends. Also the show called "The Dog Whisperer" teaches how to train dogs easily,,he is truely amazing.Just hang in there,,sounds to me like the dog will find a new home pretty quickly seeing that he is young & sweet & a shephard. Not enough people adopt dogs these days tho from a shelter so his chances there would be slim.Good luck & thx for taking the time to help the dog out.

I just wanted to mention another alternative from what every one else on here metioned. You said he can climb out of a 4 foot fence. Number one 4 feet is not high enough for a gsd type dog. Can you add on to the fence so he can't get out , or install a hot wire so when he tries to climb the fence he'll get a zap ,or even a invisible dog fence ,again he'll get a zap if he tries to climb the fence.

Another alternative could be having the dog obedience trained .It could solve a lot of problems.

Go to Altavista.com. Key in several keywords such as no kill shelters, German Shepard breeders or adopters, etc. Their are several freaks on line with websites and tons of money that may be able to help you. The easiest way is to shoot the dog, but nobody wants to do that unless they absolutely have to, so spend the time investigating what I said along with emails and phone calls. And if you dump it off, you are only making it someone else's problem, along with him learning bad (bad to us) survival tricks until he is lucky enough to wander upon someone willing to adopt him and work with him, or shoot him.

There are German Shepherd rescue organizations across the country. Google it and find one. Keep contacting until you get an answer. Many of them will help you with transportation - they will get a volunteer to come get him and get him to another state, for example. KEEP TRYING. He is depending on you for help and his future safety.

list it in craigslist.com

find your city, or close to it in the right hand column
and then post the dog.
