I floss and brush my teeth daily and see the dentist twice a year for cleaning and checkup. Most of the time everything is fine. But now the dentist wants to sell me a $3.00 Tongue scraper to scrape bacteria off my tongue. It looks like a tooth brush but with a loop at the end instead of a brush. He said it would prevent tooth decay and bad breath by removing bacteria. Could there be anything to that? I never heard of it before.

ook in the drug store next to the toothbrushes and you'll see a couple of different kinds of tongue scrapers. You can also use a spoon and a larger spoon, like a soup spoon works best. Just place the scraper as far back on your tongue as you can go, press down with light pressure and drag it to the tip of your tongue. You will probably need to do 3 swipes; left, center and right. Rinse with water for 10-15 seconds (such as after your tooth brushing when you are rinsing anyway), scrape your tongue, and then rinse again. The first couple of times you do this, you will be shocked at the gunk that comes out from between the fuzziness on your tongue and it might be a little sore, but (if you are using the right amount of pressure) the quantity will decrease and your tongue will not be sore anymore.

At least you know your dentist is not making a fortune off of selling you a tongue scraper for $3.00. The ones I like cost $2.70 each if I buy a dozen. I give them away, though, if I recommend one. :-)

Yes, it is helpful if you have a problem with bad breath. But, frankly, all you need to do is scrape the top of your tongue with your teeth after you brush. That will do the same thing.

The tongue scraper is for getting rid of all of the bacteria from food that you have eaten that cause bad breath.

Its very true. Check your local drugstore or big name store to see if you can get the tongue scrapers cheaper there then from the dentist.

THESE HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR SOME TIME. RATHER THAN JUST PUSHING THE BACTERIA AROUND WITH THE BRUSH, THE SCRAPER LITERALLY LIFTS OFF AND THEREBY REMOVES BACTERIA FROM THE SURFACE OF THE TONGUE.
