If you don't know what a puppy mill is and why that's bad, you have no business breeding.

Ethical breeders breed to improve the line and breed, not create pet quality dogs. They don't have 300 dogs. They certainly don't aspire to become a 'puppy mill', which actually does sound like what you want. Anyone who doesn't breed to improve the line is either undereducated or morally challenged.

Unless you plan on showing all 300 of these dogs, having each one certified by OFA and CERF, doing extensive screening of potential buyers, NEVER selling to pet stores, requiring altering of all pet quality dogs, etc - you will be a puppy mill or backyard breeder. You'll also be violating the guidelines of the AKC and most likely your national breed club. If you don't believe me, find the breed club for the breed you want to breed. Find the 'code of ethics'. Read it. Click here ---> http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/index.cfm for the AKC guidelines. Click the links below for info on how to ethically breed dogs. I think that you'll be surprised.

If this is a joke, thank you for wasting everyone's time. Please, finish your homework and go off to bed. The short bus will be picking you up much to early for this type of behaviour (no offense to short bus kids).

I'm not sure if you're being honest or if you're trying to tick people off.

First off, how on earth do you have 300 dogs?

There's no way that all of these dogs are not part of the same bloodline. There's some heavy inbreeding going on. And inbreeding leads to serious birth defects in puppies. Continueing this process would be CRUEL.

Plus, there is no way that you and your friends could provide the proper daily handling of 300 dogs and their pups to ensure tameness. Dog breeding is not a money-maker and is not for the uneducated. Find something else to do. And call the ASPCA to claim those dogs and find them loving homes where they will not be looked at as merchandise.

No matter how big a building you have, no matter how much land you have, no matter how substantial an HVAC system you have -- puppy mills are bad news. You think you can successfully "handle" 300 dogs a day, every day, even with some help? You'll be in over your head, and your startup expenses will be huge. Plus, with the current puppy mill backlash, your sales are going to be less than you expect.

If you really want to be a dog breeder, do it right: a very small number of dogs, lots of attention and care and training, and purebred so that you can command high prices. Running a puppy mill is like running wal*mart -- incredibly high startup costs and razor-thin margins that you'll have to make up for in volume, but volume is very difficult to attain in the first few years (at least!)

Here's a thought: open a pet-sitting service/kennel. That way you only have dogs on hand that require care and feeding when you're being paid to keep 'em, so your startup costs are low, your profit margin per dog is much higher, and you'll actually be making a profit from the first day of the first dog (because that first day/first dog can come without assistants, and with strictly word-of-mouth advertising.)

Oh, and one final note: if you're really in this for the money, and the puppy mill turns into a money pit, what happens to those dogs when you decide to give it up? Running a kennel/pet sitting service, on the other hand, means your responsibility to the dogs -- and your expenses related to the dogs -- ends the moment the last dog leaves your facility. Have a full kennel at Thanksgiving, walk away with no outstanding debts and no homeless dogs by Christmas, if you decide to give it up. It's good business, and it's the right thing to do.

(a few additional notes: your vet wants you to do this, because he knows that once you're in, you'll have tons of unhealthy dogs that need medical care -- and he'll be right there to rake in the cash. If you're talking to existing puppy mill owners, they're encouraging you to do this because they've got the same profit margin problems I've described above, and they're hoping you'll buy your initial breeding stock from them. Steer clear.)

First of all, there are more than enough dogs in the world. How many puppies will you wind up killing because they don't look right, or nobody will buy, or cost you too much money???? Puppy mills are almost as disgusting as the people who run them. Why don't you just encourage people to adopt a dog, then charge them for a ride to the pound.

And I'm not some wacky liberal PETA member...I am a Conservative who loves and respects animals.

You Jackass!!!

And nobody is putting you down because you're black...Can any of us see what you look like???? Did you say you were black??? Is that Icon really what you look like??? Nobody judged you on anything but your stupidity...AND you're still a jackass!!!!

Hi there :) I'm just wondering if you actually know what you're talking about?! We had a litter of 13 pups this summer, and let me tell you this: It is really hard work!! My husband and I both have fulltime jobs, 4 kids, a houshold to run ect.
Having 13 pups is a fulltime job in it self, if you want to take proper care of them that is.. Wich means to clean up after them, cuddle and play with all of them - every day. I sometimes had my doubts if I remembered to play/ cuddle with this or that one that day, during the time we had our pups!! And believe me - you don't make a fortune on puppies!
Do you know how much monye it actually costs to have just 1 litter of pups?? Quality puppy food, vaccinations, microchips, meds for pups if they get sick or the mom?? You have no idea, how little you actually get at the end for your own pocket... Just that you have some kind of picture of the reality :)

That doesn't sound like such a good idea! They wouldn't get proper attention and they sound like they would be locked up in cages all day long. :( That's no life for a dog that needs a lot of attention and love, and lots of room to run around. They are so many pets today in this world that are abandoned with no home. Listen to Bob Barker off The Price Is Right, "Spay or Neuter your pet!" Try to get into another business without animals. Try a product :)

Truth is, even top breeders with top dogs, that show and work there dogs, hire helpers, and devote most all their time to their dogs rarely have more than 20. So by simply stating that you want 300 dogs is reason enough for people to feel a great deal of shock. Also, the term "puppy mill", well its an ugly, ugly word.. and brings out a lot of anger.. mix that in with "300 dogs" and this would explain why people reacted so hard to you.

Having so many and being able to take the time with each and every one of them is nearly impossible. Each dog will need to be fed and have clean water and clean bowls daily. This a is a 5 minute job with one dog... multiply it by 300= 1500 minutes or 25 hours.. there is only 24 hours in a day! Each dogs kennel needs cleaned... another 5 minutes, 10 if you sanitize like you should.. and this HAS too be done every day.

Training, all dogs require physical interacting and training.. a bare minimum of 2 hours 3 times a week x 300 dogs, Thats 1800 hours a week! There is only 168 hours in a week! All in all, you would need a minimum of 20 people on staff, full time, preferably more (1 person for every 10 dogs) multiplied by lets say $8 an hour, 40 hours per week = $6400 per week in wages.

Now add in a pound of food per dog, per day.(This varies on breed, activity, etc, so it could well be more) 300 pounds of food per day can run any where form $1575- $4200 per week for 300 dogs!

Ok, want quality dogs... breeding that many will surely put your name on the map! So you'd better be dealing with quality or it wont be long any everyone will know it. Basic Vet checks and Vaccinations will run about $200 per year for every dog (x 300= $60,000) Routine genetic testing that HAS too be done to be sure of their breeding worthiness (like hip tests) about another $60,000. Showing, even 1/2 of them $20- 80 entry fee per dog, travel costs, housing costs (you add it up) and a minimum of 4 shows per dog...ugg!

Still wondering why people were shocked? So far we have come up with $332,800 in wages for helpers per year, $156,000 in food per year, $120,000 in vet costs (God forbid you have many Emergencies!) $608,000 already with out showing costs, with out the cost of ER, or formal training. $700,000 plus each year in costs, I guarantee!

Now, with all that said, too be dependable, you also have to have a contract, and guarantee.. and be willing to not only take pups back, but replace them.

Lets say you have bought each of the 300 dogs for $500 (=$150,000 and thats being nice.. show dogs are worth much more!) And lets say you produce 200 litters a year, some having no surviving pups, some having 10+ we will go with an average of 7 x 200 = 1400 pups x $500 each $700,000.

Hmmm... you may get lucky and break even, which is they way it goes if your doing a good job breeding, otherwise, your just a puppy miller.

Please consider all of this before you commit to even trying. Start small, learn about different breed, get a passion for one breed, and training, and go from there.

We don't like Puppy Mills.!!!!!!!
Puppy Mills are dog breeders that are operations that are considered to be disreputable and irresponsible.

Try adopting some from some of the shelters!!!

There are Thousands!!!

Did you know puppy mills are illegal. I hope no one buys any puppies from you since you would be making them pay loads of money for a crappy disease ridden dog. People should buy their dogs from reputable breeders, or adopt from shelters.
