Is this what some of the religious leaders concluded at the time?

His place in the Davidic line was clear.

The reason he was rejected is because he did not fit their general perception of what the Messiah would be.

The Jews wanted him to be a leader that would release them from Roman rule.

He told the Jews of that time that his kingdom was no part of this world. Because of this position he was rejected.

He was a male line descendant of King David In fact Mary AND Joseph were both descendants of King David ( the House of David) see book of Isaiah . book of Luke, etc

Only the corrupt ones (religious leaders) rejected him because" This is the verdict. Light has come into the world but men loved the darkness to hide their evil deeds."....

Nicodemus accepted him (John 3)

the question was did "Some" reject Him?." Yes some rejected Him for about every reason you can imagine. It is the one who accept Him who make the world a better place and will have eternal life in heaven forever and ever

actually, I believe Jesus *was* a male line descendant of David. Joseph was, I think, from the line of David, as was Mary. And, lots of people at the time could claim the same lineage. Since Jesus's parentage may have been suspect, this might have made a difference, but mainly I think he was just too radical. The Jews of the time were in peril of their lives on an everyday basis from the Romans, who were some mean MoFoZ-- check into this yourself if you don;t believe me. Many were tortured and crucified, not just Jesus. It was a rough time for all who were not citizens of the empire, and even for them, times were tough.

Mostly, though, I think the Jews of this time wanted a poltical leader, or a military leader, who would trample the Romans once and for all. This, clearly, did not happen.

I don't know of the existance of any historical record that suggests that anyone in Jesus times questioned his lineage. Without such documentation, you are left with speculation. Just a response to ad to namesareus where he suggests that Jews had no concept of a virgin birth. he fails to realise the old testament quotes the virgin birth hundreds of years before it happened. Isaiah 7:14 (OLd testament) Therefore the lord himself shall give you a sign: behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and they shall call his name Immanuel (God with us) Response to Jewishgirl Jesus was not the physcica lineage of anyone from earth. yet both his earthly parents were decendants of King David. If he was not the Messiah then who? since there is no more Kings in Israel or any high priests to make atonement for the sins of the people. Through inter marriage no one even knows there lineage any more so I can't see a levitical priesthood.

No. because Miriam or Marry and Joseph both are from the house of David. Marry descendant of Nathan and Joseph descendant of Solomon. Either way Jesus was the next King of Israel.

certainly his not being an offspring of david through his father, as per the requirement was his big first strike (the term actually used to describe the messiah in the bible is "offspring of david"!). That his genology testified him as a descendant of jeconiah was also a big second strike. Thirdly, claims of a "virgin birth" were likely enough to brand him as either a lunatic or someone out to decieve since judaism has no concept of a virgin birth (only pagan cults of the time did).

but all this is really just the tip of the iceberg.

IF Jesus lived and did all the things as reported by the New Testament (and that's a big "if" for non-Christians), he was rejected as the messiah simply because he failed to fulfill ANY of the prophecies considered "messianic" by Jews.

Yes, because they thought He was from Galilee.

He was actually from Bethelehem, where King David lived! It's just that He and his God-given parents had to escape to somewhere else to avoid King Herod's wrath.

He was a descendant of King David. They rejected Him because He was born poor and in a humble way. They were expecting their "King" to be rich and born of a noble family.
