As long as they're legal I don't care. It's the illegal ones that I have a problem with. And English "is" our National language. And no, Native Americans are not our ancestors. The majority of Americans are of European descent. That's why we speak English. No, it has nothing to do with culture diversity. It has to do with intelligence. The morons who think it's better to have multiple languages are that, morons. How many teachers are we going to hire to teach all these languages? How many interpreters do we have to hire because not everyone is going to know "all" the languages. I took French in high school. Why? Because I wanted to. Did I "need" to? No. Do I speak it now? No. You want to live in the United States, learn English. I was in the military and went to Germany. Guess what? I learned German. At least enough to get by. I didn't force them to learn English. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Nuff said.

One of the consequences of freedom is what you are talking about. Sadly there is not a lot we can do. Honestly I hate the legal immigrants that have lived in America for years and still don't bother learning English more than the illegal ones. This is just one more reason for an official language in America.

I immigrated to America from Germany when I was 13, and granted that I already knew a lot of English, I still took the time to perfect it, learn phrases and learn "casual" English. It's not that hard if you actually try to learn another language, especially when you are submersed in it.

I assure you that in other countries that if you don't speak the local language they do not nuture you like a baby so you can be comfortable.

When my parents came over from Greece in the early fifties, they spoke no English. They had to learn to get by and they learned English. They were still discriminated against and ripped off, beaten and robbed. They owned a restaurant in the early '60's when all this bad crap happeded. This happened because of ignorant English Canadians.
My parents had no social safety net of welfare money to start their lives here. Yes it would be nice if Immigrants learned English, It would be nice if they were not given a free lunch. Sure we should open our arms to immigrants but they have to make their way in this country just like we do.

Oh did you hit my major nerve, touche' No, they DO NOT have the right to choose what they learn and I am sooo against our school systems to be stretched financially to the max because they have to hire teachers as interpretors. Our grandparents and ancestors did not have the opportunity to speak their foreign tongue in this country- they came here to become an AMERICAN and our language is ENGLISH and anything other than English is an insult to all Americans. And if they do not want to learn the language of the country they just became legal in --- they know where the door is and I hope it does hit them on the assss on the way out...............

TONY ROMO!

Wow... you're my favorite Cowboy. That's not saying, much, though: I'm a Skins fan. But you're still cool.

To answer your question: Immersion in an English-speaking environment is often the only way to learn proper spoken English (it and Chinese are the two hardest languages). Our economy benefits greatly from giving legal residency to predominantly Asian computer programmers and engineers who can read and write English but speak poorly, at least when they first get here. They get better, though.

You have to speak English to get citizenship, unless you're a political refugee. But most of them learn, and ALL of their kids do. So it works out.

ABSOLUTELY, there are millions of legal citizens that
are legal and think that they write and speak English, but they don't. They say "wanna" instead of "want to", and they run-on separate sentences like they were just one sentence. Poor punctuation, bad diction, no agreement of subject and object, make communication gibberish. And have the GUTS
to call people who speak more than one language stubborn or illiterate? I guess this is the case of "seeing the straw in other people's eyes and ignoring the 2 by 4 in theirs"

I don't care what they speak in the privacy of their own homes but when they're in public they need to be speaking English. If they're old I'll let it pass, say over 80. Below 80 they need to learn English. I've had dozens and dozens of Mexicans (I can't say whether they were legal or not and that's not the point to this question) that try to utilize my businesses that don't speak English. They actually have the nerve to have a friend ask me in English why there aren't Spanish options. I always tell them if they want service to read the sign on the door (which is of course in English). It clearly states: No Shoes, No Shirt, No English, NO SERVICE!

Outside of the fact that it is highly to anyone who immigrates legally to learn English here, it is also required by the process of legal Immigration.
The applicant, amoung other things, is required to demonstrate a working knowledge of English.
So if you can't or won't learn English, you don't get in.
There are some proceeduers that will get you around this, like if you are elderly and just can't swing it you can petition.
Other things having to do with disabilties will work on appeal too.
Very few serious contenders for citizenship don't pass this test by the way.
There cetainly are people here legally that don't or can't yet speak English. Refugees like Cubans and some from Africa. Again, we are a compassionate country and by all means I am for helping the helpless, downtrodden or persecuted.
Mexican illegals don't qualify in this regard. They have a country that pretends to support them and yet encourages them to come here to the USA. Glad to accept Billions of dollars sent back by their citzens of Mexico to enrich Mexico and to bleed the US dry.
Poverty and ignorance are not qualifying aspects to get one into the US for citizenship. Illegals go home and if you want to come to the US, prepare to learn English and follow the law to obtain legal entry.

The notion of a non-English speaking immigrant not wanting to learn English is a farce, myth and plain and simply a lie. All immigrants would sacrifice a lot if they could learn to speak and write English. The reasons some do not learn are many but they do not include an unwillingness to learn.

There are people who were born here who don't have a grasp of the English language. What shall we do about them?

In general, the American education system prior to university is subpar relative to the rest of the world. We need to completely reform the entire system in order to properly educate everyone.
