I've heard people say the when you are sent to heaven or hell, you stay there for eternity. But how would it be fair to either reward or punish people eternally for a life that is usually just a mere 70-80 years? Seems unbalanced to me, and I've always seen balance as a key element of justice.

It is unbalance and the people going to or in hell would agree with you. I guess those in heaven would see it as being fair.

It depends on who you talk to and what religion or beliefs the person has. The Catholics believe in Heaven, Hell and a place in between hell called purgatory. The Japanese believe they come back to life from anything from a pop can to an orange. The relatives usually choose how I can't remember. I did witness a birthday party where the family had a small party like a picnic, with cake and all that. As stated in the bible Christ died for our sins so that we may have life after death. If you really want to get into it start reading the "Left Behind Series" the movies are not like the books and get into this pretty heavily. They will make you think and what is going on today over in the middle east its scary.

Eternity isn't measured in time as we know time to be measured.
At least, that's the way it has always been explained to me. Look at it this way. Our 70 or 80 years of life here on earth might pass in a second or two in eternity. Nobody really knows!
The thing is, if you live a good life, don't hurt anyone on purpose, follow the Commandments or as some people call them, The Golden Rules, then you won't have to worry about spending an eternity in hell.
If, on the other hand, you spent your entire life cheating, lying, stealing, being rude, nasty, hateful, prideful, thinking only of yourself and not of others, then yes, spending an eternity in hell is justified. Because doing all those bad things here during your lifetime, you may have made others spend a lifetime in hell here on earth. Now, doesn't that sound more balanced?

Who are we to place ourselves higher than God Himself to define justice?

God made the ultimate sacrifice of His own Son to save our sorry, undeserving butts from hell. Did we deserve that? No. But the way of escape has been made by the grace and mercy of God.

Likewise, can I ever live a life good enough to deserve Heaven? No way. Like you said, what is 70-80 years compared with eternity?

Either way, God was looking out for us and clearly shows that He wants us to choose Him and be with Him forever. He loves us THAT MUCH!

It's a fear tactic. If people are afraid of being sent to hell for eternity then they'll follow the religion, go to church and conform so they can get into heaven.

But I agree that it seems unbalanced or even down right stupid. Eternity for stealing a loaf of bread to feed your children. The children you weren't allowed to abort because that would be murder? The children that you had out of wedlock because you couldn't afford to get married "under the law" or "under god". Quite unresonable, seen in anyway, especially when you toss in all the ways people are "finding" to get "free" ways into heaven. Problem is that you have to have money or this or that, that the average person couldn't do in the first place and that only the "elite" can afford.

Actually no where in the bible does it say that you will live in hell for eternity. Eternal life is only promised to the save. The lost will be out of existance forever but wont be burning alive forever.

I think 70 years or so is plenty of time. If you have a heart set on sinning, it wouldnt matter if you lived only 20 years or 2000 years.

It's because of our own choices. If we choose not to follow God and do as He wills, then He will sadly let us go the way we tend towards.

God is not an unjust and unfair God. He displayed his fairness and justness and at the same time love for us, when He sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to earth to suffer and die for our sins, In doing so, Jesus Christ paid the full price of punishment for our sins and granted unto all forgiveness of sins and repentance unto eternal life.

Those who refuse to accept this gift of salvation will only get their just desserts, as they wanted in the first place. God would not force anyone into heaven. He just asks you gently and requests lovingly that you trust in His Son Jesus Christ for salvation that is eternal, so that the barrier of sin between you and Him is removed through forgiveness and you can be reconciled to Him. If you refuse, then He lets you have your way and sends you to hell where you will be separated from Him for ETERNITY.

It's not balance here, but choice. You make a choice. God or Satan, for eternity to come. Ain't that fair enough?

From my point of view... life is like a process to grab the key.
there's only 2 keys (key to Heaven, key to Hell), and we need to choose only 1 of them.

If you're a bad person then you deserve what you get. That's like saying "Why should teenager get life in jail for murder, for a life of only 17 years?"
