Detachment sent ahead of the main force to ensure its uninterrupted advance; to protect the main body against surprise; to facilitate the advance by removing obstacles and repairing roads and bridges; and to cover the deployment of the main body if it is committed to action

An advance guard is a group of soldiers, or guards or men at arms but I think they all mean almost the same thing, anyways, its a group of he above listed that goes ahead of the main body of a moving group, especially infront of a royal contingent, to make sure that the area ahead is safe for the larger group following behind them.
