Hi there,
My sons----three of them used metal bunk beds over a period of time when they were growing up. The ladder had round metal pipe for the steps.
You didn't mention the size of your son or what his body type was. My sons almost ran up the steps pulling with their hands like monkeys.
When me as their dad climbed up into the top bunk to read a bedtime story, it really hurt my feet.
You may have him pull more with his hands and arms as he climbs the steps.
Good luck

Buy his a special pair of slippers to keep by the bottom of the ladder when he's not in bed and somewhere safe at the top (where they wont fall out) while he is sleeping. This way he can protect himself and they shouldn't get lost.
Alternitivly, you can buy some thin foam and tape it to the bars. But this might look a little messy.

instead of having him climb up, put some padding on the wall (securley with gorilla glue) and toss him up when it is time to go to bed. This way his feet will not hurt.

yes, go to your local hardware store and ask for pipe insulation, it's tubular with a hole in the middle. 5 bucks for ten feet of it will do. slice one side open with a boxcutter or something, slide it on a rung and duct tape it securely. hope this helps.

I have never heard of a medal bed, perhaps you mean metal...put some padding on his stairs, or wear his slippers up and kick them off.

My younger brother had the same problem, so I taped towels around each step and it fixed it right away. It dosent look good but it does the job.
