Do I have to drink water to get the recommended 8 cups? Or will any liquid count, as long as its not a diuretic ?

Since Gatorade is made up mostly of water, technically you are consuming it. However, Gatorade has a lot of sugar and drinking 8 cups a day would be pretty unhealthy. Also...Gatorade was created to replenish bodily fluids lost during intense sports/training. The excessive electrolytes are not necessary for normal drinking and can be unhealthy.

Several scientific studies have been done now, which proves that you can count ALL liquids towards your recommended intake, except alcohol.

In fact, one study compared one group of people who drank only water with another group who drank the same amount of coffee. At the end of the day, both groups were equally hydrated!

So now experts are questioning whether coffee and tea are really diuretic, as they used to think.

However, be careful about using sugary drinks instead of water. Gatorade replaces essential salts, but it is high in carbs so it will make you fat if you drink too much. A banana will replace your salts just as effectively for much less fattening power.

"Nothing is better than water to replenish what your body needs to stabilize itself". I work at UPS and they tell me this EVERY summer when its like 150 degrees outside. Everything else is really just a filler and is only taken as a subistitutue for taste, even Gatorade. If you've ever looked at the nutrition info of the side of a gatorade you would probably notice how much sugar it has!! Sure it has alot of vitamins and replenishing factors but the sugar could turn you diabetic! All that sugar can't possibly be that good for you. And diet drinks (yeah the non-carbonated water too) have alot of the fake sugars like aspertame that probably isn't really good for you either. Its good to have sometimes, but all the time is too much. So yeah, water is the best option for your body, whether you like or not. You may like the taste of gatorade and feel the little burst of energy from the sugar, but your body will prefer water.

I recommend you drink gatorade after a work out or during. Water is to prevent cramps in the muscle. The reason people drink gatorade after a work is that they need some sugar for the muscle which is basically a energy I don't remeber the whole reason but just go with that and see what you get

I agree that TOO much Gatorade can be a bad thing. If you are not constantly active it will pack on some serious pounds, as it too contains high fructose corn syrup (or a close derivative). The sodium content can also be hard on your body. If you work in a hot climate (outdoors) this is essential as you lose salt and other minerals through sweat. Ideally H2O is best, but you do need to replenish electrolytes and sodium so you can continue to hydrate. Hope this helps some.

Gatorade is alright, but you can't replace water. If you need help getting down the recommended amount, try Crystal Light..

Any liquid counts.

All liquids are 99.99% water and when they mix in your stomach you can tell pure water from anything else.
