when i was 12, i chipped one of my two front teeth and knocked out half of the other one when i fell off a trampoline. i have temporary caps (fillings) on them today (im 20, almost 21 now) would it be ok for me to get braces? or should i get permanent crowns first?

Yes, you can still get braces. Most of the time the brackets adhere to the filling material without any special preparation. Occasionally we need to use a special bonding agent to get the bracket to adhere, but it is really not anything major.

I would recommend that you talk to an orthodontist and your dentist and the three of you decide whether it would be best to do the braces first, or the new crowns. We usually recommend waiting until after the orthodontic treatment for restorative work, if that is feasible.

It depends on how your orthodontist wants to plan your treatment. Not even your dentist would know until your orthodontist tells him the recommended treatment. Generally, you would want permanent crowns at your age, even though you will be shifting teeth. But then again, how much movement are needed in those front teeth? Consulting an orthodontist is your best bet.

Well if they are only caps, then getting braces would most likley knock them out, or they will take them out and give you braces that have the caps attached to them. When the teeth that you want are straightened then you can get the permanent crowns in there. Atleast that is how they did my friend.

I think you should see a professional dentist about this, especially one who has had a chance to see your teeth and done a proper examination/xrays before getting an absolute yes or no.
