Wow...Mr. Curious sure judges the books by their cover. His answer is completely wrong for most people. I have 3 and they rarely ever show and my mom was very attension giving all my life.
I love art...I have decorated my body and I love my tattoos. I have 2 dragons, I love dragons, they represent power, wisdom, and magic and mine are beautiful dragons. Peircings I only have my ears peirced now.
I do admit that some people tend to get tats when depressed. Looking for a physical pain to help take away the emotional pain. I've had the temptation a few times and a few of my ex's tattoos came out of an emotional hurt. Like when his grandpa died he got one soon after and after he found out he had a chronic disease he got a couple. Some people tend to do that but not all.
It really depends on the person. Some people draw up their own tats and get them on their body to show off their art. I'm gonna get one of my designs I made at some point.

It's self expression! It's Self expression and Art in my opinion! I have mine done for myself and I pick everything I want on me! I have two right now! Pay no attention to Mr. Curious. he's probably looking for attention himself! never judge a person because they have a tattoo! And Actually I have 2 great loving parents and I have always had attention in my family I'm an only daughter! My life as kid was fun. Most people with a tattoo or more have a story behind it. Not really seeking attention but it's something more deeper than other people look at it as!

People tattoo themselves or have body piercings for may different reasons. Some may do it for the pleasure, some may have a meaning behing a certain design, some may have a cultural influence, and some may do it just to fit in.
Some people are VERY CLOSED MINDED toward other people with tattoos and/or body piercings....a-hum. I know MANY professionals who sport tattoos and body piercings. Most of these persons do not need to shout out and have themselves noticed. Actually many prefer to keep their body art to themselves.
Some see it as scaring themselves....that is fine, but don't criticize and degrade others in what you have no real knowledge in.

People use tattoos to mark themselves with important things that have affected their lives or things that mean so much to them that scaring their body with it is the highest tribute they can pay. Tattooing and other body modification is much more expressive and truthful than plastic surgey which is only done in the cosmetic sense to improve flaws the person feels they have plus they are trying to hide the fact they have had somethng done. People who have tattoos are proud to let the world see what they have done to themselves. I think tattooed people are very interesting and uttlery unique.

It's personal expression, I suppose. My husband enjoys designing his own tattoos. It sometimes takes him several months to years to get it right before he get it done. I personally don't have any but I don't have a problem with them. I just can't imagine getting anything that I might still like when I'm in my eighties. I think they are addictive though because now he has 5 and wants more. ??? I did once have a belly ring and tongue ring though. That was my own personal rebellion. I was always a good kid and afraid to do anything drastic so I got those in my early twenties because they weren't permanent. Now I don't have them and the holes closed up. I have friends that have all kinds of ém. I guess it just depends on your view of beauty.

It's Art, it's a self expression of oneself in an artistic way. There's a personal meaning behind a tattoo. WHOA! Mr Curious, you're a very judge mental person aren't ya?

I would like to know why you have such poor English skills....

But to answer your question, its simple. Its self expression and something that is liked by the people who get them. I love tattoos and body piercings. My tattoos are personal and matter to me. My piercings are an accessory much like a necklace or bracelet. I'm happy with my body mods and I do them for me.

You don't have to understand it, you don't have to like it. Just respect that the people with tattoos and piercings are human too and that there is nothing wrong with it.

First of all, don't listen to Mr. Curious. He doesn't know what he's talking about. I had 2 very loving and attentive parents. I got my tattoo as a memorial to them. People have used ink and jewelry to adorn their bodies for centuries.

Its art and expression, nothing more. Some people use the physical pain to momentarily block out emotional pain, but that is a far fetched Psycho Babel thought.
