It's like jumping off a rope swing or the first time you rode a bike.... You just need to muster up your courage and go for it. The more often you do it the easier it will get.
I suggest starting out singing at a karaoke show or open mic towards the end of the night. Tell yourself that everyone is drunk so no one will notice if you're good, bad or somewhere in the middle.
DO NOT DRINK OR DO DRUGS FOR COURAGE! These things may seem to "loosen you up" but they take away from your performance and become a crutch. It's a much better high to get over your fears and simply enjoy performing for people.
Most of all try to relax! Go to the ladies room, take a few deep breaths, shake yourself loose and make some weird noises. Don't forget to BREATHE on stage!
I hope everything goes well for you! REMEMBER.... Every day you waste being shy is a day you could have spent singing! :)

I used to have the same problem, and even after being in a band for a while, I would still get scared on a solo. But one day, I was trying out for a new band, and I told myself to "act as if I have confidence" because thats what it really boils down to. Your not scared as much as you lack confidence in yourself. If you don't like to hear yourself singing on a recording, then you need to learn to like yourself first. Then once you make up your mind and act as if you are confident, you will be. You still may be a little scared inside but don't let anyone see that, be brave and remember, it's worth it. Go see people doing live music and do some comparisons. Or try doing karaoke first, that will give you a response to evaluate yourself with. Try online Karaoke at ksolo or singshot, or singsnap. I like Singsnap, my name is Mysteri

My psychology teacher told us something interesting. We have the same symptoms (rapid breathing, pounding heart, etc.) whether we are nervous or excited. It's the word we attach to these things that make the difference. I used to have panic attacks to the point of locking myself in the bathroom and took singing to get over them. Relaxation exercises and visualization help too. And practice.

You need to become one with audience, and the stage. Whoever is listening to you wants to be there, so give them what they want. Also, close your eyes so there is just you and music. Just know that you have nothing to be nervous about you are a great singer
