Definitely either Shepard's Pie or Cottage Pie (depends where you come from).

1. Peel about 750 grams to a kilo of starchy potato's like kennebecs and bring them to the boil then let simmer slowly until cooked through (soft when stabbed by a knife).

2. Brown a large chopped onion in a separate pan in a little oil or butter.
3. Add between 500 grams and 750 grams of beef mince (ground beef), and some crushed garlic. Stir until the beef is browned.
4. Add 2 medium carrots (grated) and one small swede or turnip (grated) and if you like - 2 sticks of chopped celery.
5. Add 1 can of crushed tomato's, a dessert spoon of white sugar, a pinch of mixed herbs and some black pepper.
6. Stir all ingredients and add 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 2 -3 tablespoons of tomato sauce AND barbecue sauce and some plum sauce if needed.
7. Turn the heat down and simmer gently until the mixture reduces, stirring regularly.

While this is reducing mash the potato's with some butter and cream or milk until smooth.

Once the meat is cooked drain off some of the liquid and spray a large casserole dish with cooking oil or the equivalent and place the meat mixture in the dish, put the potato mixture on top of the meat and level out.

Put a few dollops of butter on top of the potato and place under a grill until the top browns to your liking.

You can add shredded cheese on the top if you like.

Enjoy - it is one of my all time favourites.

1/4 pt Meat stock or milk
Salt and pepper to taste

When cool, spread the potatoes about an inch thick all over the dish, working lightly with a fork. Dot with pieces of butter or cover with grated cheese, if liked. Bkae in a 400 degree oven for 30 minutes.
This dish may be prepared in the morning and left for cooking in the evening wothout harm. Cabbage is the best vegetable to accompany this dish.
