Between NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, NASCAR, golf, tennis, etc. etc. they don't have much time for a "new" sport. Plus there is the fact that the UFC has some proprietary elements which tend to delegitimize it. The octagon cage is trademarked, the organization lacks transparency, etc. Rightly or wrongly, that puts it in the same league as Slam ball or American Gladiators in eyes of mainstream sports journalists. If there was an independent international sanctioning/ranking body for all MMA promotions that would help, but I doubt that is going to happen.

They've done a great job to even get it where it is now, away from the early 90's style. But, i still find myself defending ufc by those who say it's barbaric.
Just this Sunday though, in the sport section, there was an eight page pullout on our hometown guy Matt Serra, but also listing the rules. Not a bad article for ufc fans. I think that may have helped.

Every now and then they'll touch on it but only if it's on like Best Damn or PTI. As far as sportscenter, don't think it's ever gonna happen. Kinda like why they rarely touch on soccer unless its the world cup or something. So many potential avenues to cover. For instance, are they gonna cover UFC, Pride, K2. MMA in some sort is ALWAYS going on all over the world. In mainstream sports big events are usually going on where all the best are at like Wimbledon or the Masters.

thats a good point, they need to show some highlights of any or all of the fighting organizations. It should be American football, basketball, baseball, MMA, hockey, tennis (only the hot tennis chicks). Who gives a crap about golf and Nascar, where is the action in that?

the ufc and mma in general is a new sport still. it still carries the stigma of being a "no holds barred" street fight to a lot of people, and not a legitimate sport. as people get more and more educated in it, and it gets more time it will eventually i'm sure. i mean, big boxing matches get airtime. give it time, it'll be there.

Because Boxing ruling bodies and promotion companies have threatened to walk out if the major networks begin to cover MMA.

The media likes to socially engineer. MMA is a fairly polpular sport certainly more popluar than WNBA yet no media outlets want to cover it because it has a brutal aspect. It is bogu if you ask me.

people still don't like the fact that ufc is a sport that is gaining popularity. some think its too brutal and don't give it the respect that ufc deserves. ufc is like gay people. nobody accepted them at first, now people don't care so much because they realize they aren't going anywhere.

It is a newer sport, it is still fighting for recognition... just as NASCAR and others have done. It can be pretty brutal... needs a bigger fan base too.
