ive had parakeets before but its been awhile . but my sister just got me a bird that ive been wanting for like 4 yrs now. its a pink bourke parrot/ parakeet. she is 2 years old. i want her to learn to trust me but she doesnt really want near me too much. i want to train her to talk and get on my hand and stuff. the only time she ever got on my hand was when i put seed in my hand for her. she took a few bites and jumped off again. can she be trained ? how do i accomplish this? please give me real answers with plenty of detail if you can. :)

she acts like she is scared she gets kind of crazy when you try to touch her. so instead i will slowly place my hand in her cage and not move, she still acts a little crazy.

Same happened to me. I still have 2 parakeets Darcy and Caroline and Caroline only goes on my hand once in a while while Darcy never went on my hand except the time when i had seeds. Get a book from the library and read it several times and keep doing the stuff like talking to her and finger taming her over and over and she will get used to it. Do everything for her but punish it lightly. She has to get used to ur voice and ur touch. She just needs time to get used to.

There are several web sites that you can get training information for parrots. Just 'Google' your bird type.
I found when training my Quaker that repitition and patience are needed to train a bird. I think that training your bird to 'step up' is crucial in future training sessions. So I would start there and gain the trust of your bird. I would also be consistant in teaching them to talk. For instance every morning I told my parrot 'good morning' over and over, after about 3 days, he began repeating it. I did the same thing every evening but told him ' good night, love you, see you in the morning', after 3 or 4 days he was mimmicking that and each night his words got clearer and clearer. He now has the vocabulary of a 3 or 4 year child!
The one thing I would like to share with you is never strike at or hit your bird, any trust you had will be gone. To discipline your bird, you must do it within 3 seconds of the negative behavior. For my parrot I say 'no no', and he usually stops the act, and if he is on my hand, I bring my hand down quickly, as to make him feel un balanced , just enough to make him flutter his wings, and repeat 'no no'.
Good luck!

They are not the greatest talkers, but you can never tell.Try one word first and attach it with real meaning. Like "Snack?" and give her a treat. There are different ways to get a shy bird on your finger. Try a perch that you hold first. Before that associate a treat with a word or sound like a clicker. If you choose the clicker, every time you click it, have a treat and give it to her. Do this frequently for about 10 days then present her with a hand held perch and use the clicker to entice her on it and of course frequent short lessons. Use the same technique for perching on your finger. Many people use the command "step up" instead of a clicker. Always associate the sound/word you choose with a treat. all you need is time and patience. I was told my parrot wouldn't say anything until around one year and he/she is 6 months old and says "Chow-chow" for a sunflower seed. I discovered the one treat my bird will sell its soul for.Don't give up. You can do it. Keep it up.

Keep putting your hand in her cage until she gets used to you. My mom also used a pair of gloves that the bird coudn't bite through to gently take her bird out. Once the bird doesn't freak out when your hand is near it it should be fine, but you have to do it alot. as for teaching your bird to talk that is easy just keep repeating yourself to your bird. However sometimes they will pick up on things not intended for them to learn lol. I hope this was a little help.
