It took many thousands of years to create a wheel that was Circular....Round.
The circular wheel has the least friction...The more circular the wheel, the less friction...a simplified explanation.
The craftsman and architects found that logs of the same diameter could be used as rollers to move heavy blocks and cargo.
The circular wheel was then adapted to wagons, carts and chariots.
Also, the circular wheel was adapted for pulleys with ropes to reduce the force required to lift objects...Called the Mechanical advantage using pulleys and ropes.

Wheels necessarily had to be circular once they had axles. If one was only interested in rolling on top of wheels, there's an infinity of different shapes that will offer smooth, level rolling on top of the wheels. However, once loads were place on axles, only the circle offers smooth, level rolling on axles of such wheels. The solution is unique.

because wheels need to go in a circle to keep going and centripetal force keeps them going in a constant speed around and around, and centripetal force only works for circular motion.
