is anyone here a civil engineer?

what is a typical day in your job? I'm probably going to major in civil engineering next year, and I was wondering if there was any information you have about it that I wouldn't be likely to find on the net?

I am a civil engineer, and I rock. Everybody wants to be me.

Civil engineering involves a more broad level of understanding than many other engineering majors, since you need knowledge in environmental, structural, transportation, water, and geotechnical.

I have a bachelors in environmental engineering, a masters in civil engineering, and a professional engineer's license from the State of California. A typical day invovles visiting construction sites, observing what my field engineer has been overseeing, holding meetings with clients and builders, designing civil engineering features, such as buildings, foundations, utilities, bridges, or roads, then writing reports and answering questions.

What you wouldn't find on the net? There's a lot! What do you want to know? Pay is pretty good, you are outside about half the time and inside the office about half the time.....also, people respect you......it's a good career.

I am a EE, not a civil engineer, but my father was a civil engineer as well as a structural engineer. (However, like squirespeak, I too have a masters in engineering and a professional engineering registration in California.)

I'd just like to add that if you go into civil engineering, go ahead and get the structural engineering education as well. A civil engineer may be able to design a roadway, but they can't do bridges, or buildings for that matter.
