No difference to me they all take poor care of the dogs and puppies! Unless it's a BYB just planning on breeding a pet once or twice but sometimes BYB's can turn into puppy mills.

One obvious difference is the scale of operations. The puppy mill is on a much larger scale and may involve many different breeds of dogs. The backyard breeder may have two pet dogs and decide to make some bucks breeding them. As far as the care of the dogs goes, the backyard breeder will probably take better care of their dogs and pups over the Mill dogs. You will know you are at a "mill" if you ask to see a certain pup and the person will bring the puppy to you rather than let you in to see all the dogs. That person will never allow you "inside".
The backyard breeder more than likely has the "at home" atmosphere.
Which dog is "better"? that is hard to decide. The "Mill" dogs can end up with lots of health problems. The backyard breeder pays no attention to the quality of the pups they produce.
Hope that helps...

BYB - may or may not care about their dogs and the puppies they produce. I have no problem with someone breeding pets so long as they do it right.
Commercial breeders - Large scale breeding operations, where MOST peoples pups come from, and many people are happy with their commercially bred dog. Most take care of their stock, although I don't think it is much of a life for the dogs. I do know that at least some make sure that the dogs/puppies get regular handling.
Puppy mills - Usually totally hidden from the public, these breeders do not take decent care of their animals. They may live in small dirty cages and not get Vet care at all. Puppies are often sickly as well.
I don't think it is fair that people lump all non-show breeders together, there are differences. Not all BYBs and CBs are terrible, that is where most people get their puppies.
*I* would not get a puppy from any of these breeders, but alot of people do.

I think of a puppy mill the type of operation that pumps out puppies one litter after another cross breed for the Hybred and CKC registers the dogs. I think sometimes a family might want to have a litter of puppies is often labled a back yard breeder but are not. Then there are back yard breeders that are similar to puppy mills they just have less dogs.

Puppy mills are on a much larger scale, has hundreds of animals, may different breeds. Housed in deplorable conditions, breeds over and over until the females are burnt out and when they are done with them, they take them out back and shoot them usually.
Most people put the term backtard breeder on anyone who owns a dog or 2 and breeds them. Most of these dogs are well cared for and loved. Not at all in the same league as puppy mills. Maybe these breeders are less informed and well educated, but should not be lumped together as in the same league as a puppy mill.

There is prolly but a fine line. Your average backyarder, often just wants to breed a litter of pups for the fun of it, with little or no regard as to health issues regarding the parents, nor in fact their parentage. Typically, these pups will not be registered.
The puppy farmer/miller on the other hand, will breed on a very large scale, many breeds, whatever happens to be flavour of the month. Generally these will be purebred dogs, but again no attention paid to temperament, health or inbreeding. The bitches will be kept in the most appalling conditions, bred every season until they drop dead. The sires are only kept for so long as they can perform. Death rate amoungst pups is huge and often birth dates are faked so that the breeder can get rid of them as young as 4 weeks old. Pedigrees are often faked etc. 'Tis very, very sad indeed. The backyarder is a pig ignorant idiot, but the millers knows precisely what they are doing.

In my opinion none. They are not trying to better the breed they are in it for the money. My great dane came from a back yard breeder and she looks like a whippet on steroids. They were not trying to breed good dogs according to breed guidelines through the kennel clubs they just wanted the big dollars. She ended up in rescue because the breeder wasn't seeing to her basic needs like water and food and cleaning up after them. Don't get me wrong I'm sure there are decent back yard breeders but you really need to be careful if you are getting a puppy.
