It's been shown that making a list of positive things that you do or either things that happen to you everyday makes a difference in people who have depression. If we write at least 5 things a day, this will confirm for us that there is good things in our lives. It's important to fight the negative thinking. It's amazing how much easier to get things done when we concentrate on the positive and how hard it is to do anything when thinking negative. The mind is a great factor taking charge of depression along with all the rest of diet, walking, stretching, praying/meditating, etc.

There are natural suppliments out there that can help, see a naturopath at a health foods store. St. John's Wort is one thing that is popular for mood elevation. It takes a little while, so they have to be patient. Also, exercise raises endorphins and improves mood too. Get them moving. Make sure they don't eat sugar or drink alcohol, both are depressants. Healthy eating is a must. Have them get sunlight once a day. Taking vitamin D is important especially during winter months.

Doing exercise is great at helping someone who is depressed. Whether it is playing sport, going for a walk or joining a gym, the natural adrenaline you get from being active helps you feel more confident and happy. The only problem is finding the motivation to get up and get active! Why don't you join a sports team (e.g. netball, soccer, tennis) and encourage your friend to join you.

Therapy is probably the best alternative to pills. However getting exercise and eating healthy also help.
