A popular misconseption is that dogs age 7 years for each calender year. In fact, canine aging is much morerapid during the first two years of the dog's life. After the first two years the ratio settles down to 5 to 1 for small and medium breeds. For large breeds the rate is 6 to 1, and for giant breeds the rate is 7 to 1. Thus at 10 years of age a Great Dane would be 80 years old, while a pug would only be 64.

We are not sure of my dogs age either the vet says she is about 3-4 too. I don't think it is totally possible to tell. Teeth might help depending on how discolored they are, also when they are getting old they usually get white on their faces. You probably won't be able to come up with an exact age but you should be able to tell if your dog is old by how he acts and white face. I don't think it really matters how old exactly your dog is because some dogs live to be 18 some don't. We just lost my dog Spunki last december to lymphoma and he was only 7 and he didn't look old at all. It all depends.
Here is a great page for dog ages, Even just for fun it's a cool page http://www.poochiepals.com/Dogs.htm

I know you probably don't want to spend money at the vets just for his age but they will also give him a health check so then you'll know how many years left goodluck.

One year of the dog's life is equal to SEVEN years human life. Just take however long you've had the dog and times it. We just got our dog, and I cannot even imagine thinking about losing him...I'm already so attached to him! Just enjoy the time you have with your dog, take care of him, love him, and make his life great..Sounds like you already are doing so.
