In 5 years, do you think Macs will be more popular than Windows like they used to be. And do you think a brand new OS will come along and overrule both of them?

Macs will never come back over Windows, mostly because no one wants to learn a new program. Plus a lot of professional programs are windows based, so switching to a different operating system is just not an option for most consumers. Macs are crazy expensive too. I would never buy one, even though I appriciate the rejection of windows.

Who can predict the furture? If you asked me in 1985 if the Berlin Wall would be gone by 1990, I would have said, "No way" but it is gone.

A really useful and powerful Windows laptop will cost you $1,000 or more, so I think, except for the people who can't afford a powerful computer, the price is virtually the same for Windows or Mac laptops.

Will there be a new OS that is better than what we can use now? Not likely in the next 5 years. UNIX has been king of the operating system hill since it was developed by a couple of ATandT engineers in the late 1960s. It is the most powerful and secure system. Macintosh graphic interface has been the most amazing interface for an operating system since it was first released in 1984. Others, such as Microsoft, copy it but never exceed it.

Computer developments are amazingly fast, like those one minute capsule year-end video montages we get to see on New Year's Eve. Money is also a big factor as well as ethics. Microsoft has shown itself to have the advantage in low-ethics which can really help a business to crush competitors, especially when the government doesn't do much to stop them. Apple wants the consumer to accept Windows on a Mac and to buy Apple hardware that can run Mac OS X or Windows. The limitting factor is that some people don't care about being able to switch back and forth and some people don't want to buy Windows Vista to install on their Mac. They will be able to buy a really cheap Windows box that already has Vista for about 500 bucks so why buy a Mac and then spend at least 200 bucks on Vista also?

The latest stats show Mac to be 6 percent of the operating system market which is a 20 percent increase in one year. I envision that in 5 years Mac will be about 10 percent of the market which is very good. That will be enough to make more programmers learn C++ language so they can make Mac applications.

The main lag for Apple has always been games and schools. So long as schools keep switching to Dell, it will keep Macs out of the hands of kids. If kids grow up using Windows, few will switch. Apple needs some gung-ho effort to get into classrooms. When that happens again, it will make the future very bright for Apple.

Hello Jordan Watkins,

Besides the return of Steve Jobs, I think that the Mac OS X has been a big part of the success of the Mac in the last five years. Apple has become the biggest distributor of Unix in the world. That alone, is pretty incredible.

Naturally, I'm a Mac user, so I'm very biased as far as the Mac goes, and would love to see the Mac surpass Windows. I would sure like to see mobile phones and PDAs have an easier-to-use Mac interface. Hint, hint.

However, I tend to think that Windows, the Mac OS, and Linux/Unix and X-Windows are becoming so close to each other that I feel that the future of computing that the OS will be indistinguishable from each other.

I think the Mac is on a roll due to the fact that they're using Intel chips and can run both the more secure Mac OS X and the more popular Windows. But, I also believe that public knowledge and personal needs play a role.

Not many hardcore gamers are going to use the Mac despite the Intel chips now being used which can run all the Windows games and Mac-only games, but you might have a newbie who's into Linux and build a computer from scratch and install that. Today you still have consumers using unsafe Windows machines because that's more popular and maybe that's all they know about.

This is coming from a diehard Mac fan too.
