I need a root canal I was told but some people told me getting it pulled would hurt less. I'd have the tooth missing but its a lower back tooth so it wouldnt be seen when I smile. I just want what is going to hurt the least basically. also I hear dentists push for root canal because they get more money that way.

The only time I've seen anyone in pain during or due to a root canal is when they come in with the tooth badly abscessed. This is because an abscess creates too much of an acidic environment which MAY make it tough to anesthesitize (sp?). Because of this it you start to feel discomfort let the dentist know and he'll give you more "juice". All root canals are are bigger fillings. If the filling doesn't hurt neither will the rct. Below is an a link to everything you want to know about root canal treatment and more from simplestepdental.com (my favorite site as anyone following my answers will have realized). http://www.simplestepsdental.com/SS/ihtSS/r.WSIHW000/st.31927/t.31927/pr.3.html

If you go for root canal treatment....
root canal price + final restoration (crown, full cuspal coverage amalgam)

If you go for extraction
Extraction price (dependent if you do IV sedation or just plain anesthetic) + final restoration (Fixed partial denture i.e. bridge; removable partial denture; Implant which includes surgery plus crown if it takes; possible orthodontics if you decide to wait for permanent restoration)

Overall you would be saving money on root canals with final restoration. Just do research and make an informed decision. Don't just factor in the price...

Remember if you had periodic exam/cleanings this might have been prevented.

NOTE: Prevention is cheaper than fixing. The more you do at home the less they do in the dental chair!!!

Root Canal Or Tooth Extraction

Depends on the tooth. I had a root canal a few weeks ago and it was TERRIBLE! But I had another root canal and it was totally fine- no pain, nothing bad my jaw was just a bit sore from keeping my mouth open for that long. I had a tooth extracted a week ago and that was HORRIFYING!! I would have taken the root canal over that any day but the tooth couldn't be saved. If they can save your tooth w/ a root canal, but it's infected, I really think you should be on antibiotics for a few days before they do the root canal. If there is infection present, the novacaine won't be effective and that is what made mine so awful. So, root canal as long as there is no infection, or you get the infection cleared up before. Extractions leave lingering pain and complications. Root canal, if done properly, is said and done- no lingering pain excpet a sore jaw.

Root canals don't hurt in almost all cases. If it is hurting, the dentist wont continue the procedure until you are numb or he will send you home with some antibiotics and have you come back so you can get numb.
Dentists push for root canals not because they make more money but because it is the standard of care... just like physicians recommend sugery on a serious broken bone instead of amputation. A dentist could make more money doing an extraction because it only takes a few minutes... root canals take much more of their time. This is why oral surgeons make a ton of money.
Root canals can be uncomfortable only because you are in the chair for a long time. Having a molar pulled is much more uncomfortable and traumatic just because of the force being put on your jaw. I would get a root canal any day over an extraction.

Extraction is no substitute for a root canal. The latter allows you to retain the original tooth. The pros and cons of root canal and extraction have been well explained above. As with so many, you may also explore the option of traveling abroad during the coming holidays. In a stay of 7-10 days you can get root canal as well as ceramic crown. One root canal and a crown may not give any saving but your holiday may turn out to be nearly free. Make your internet search like affordable root canal dental tourism in india etc. Good luck

I just had my first root canal, for a fractured tooth. I definitely did not want to lose it (since there was a chance that the fracture could have been too bad), but I am pretty darn sore from this. It don't think it will take long to clear up, but right now I'd almost rather have the soreness of my wisdom teeth removal back! Although, during the root canal really wasn't anything worse then getting a filling, it just took longer.

A root canal is more painful, but with an expert dentist, it will take a shorter time and cause as much pain as a tooth extraction. Better to have your own tooth than a tooth implant which happens to be very costly and very painful. Unless it is the molar at the end, all other teeth need to be replaced or it would cause uneven wear out and replacement of other teeth. Even if you pull your tooth out, you would need an implant or bridge. A bridge is less painful but is not the actual tooth. Rather 2 teeth support the burden of one more. So the choices for you:
1. Root Canal only
2. Tooth extraction + Tooth implant
3. Tooth extraction + Tooth Bridge
4. Tooth extraction only (only for molars at the end)
Your choice will be a combination of your pain suppressing levels and cost involved. :) Hope you found it useful.

Go for the root canal, believe it or not you will miss that tooth They make a big difference in your chewing. I have had 4 root canals and they are not bad at all, do not let other people scare you. When you remove a tooth it effects all your teeth and the ones next to the removed tooth... in time start moving. It does cost more but saving that tooth is worth the cost.

Hi..I just had a root canal today...didn't feel a thing, almost feel asleep in the chair. If you can afford it, safe the tooth because a missing tooth can make the other teeth shift and become uneven. Your bite will be different too.
Of course the dentist will push for the root canal but not because they get more money because if you they can save your tooth that is the best thing to do...It really doesn't hurt, I didn't even feel the needles they use to freeze you. Its worth saving your tooth, even if its in the back. Good luck to you! :)
