It's below zero where I am and my little miniature mUTT is outside. I'd let her inside because she's housebroken and been to obedience school and all that crap but... she likes it outside. I had to buy the loony a little dog house because I thought she'd freeze, but nooOO---- she's as happy as a monkey in a tree out there.
She goes in the little dog house when she's chilled and then when she warms up-- she's out exploring .
Her house has a blanket in it but hay works even better for keeping outside dogs warm.
Just keep the food and water bowl full and check up on your dog every now and then. They'll let you know if it's too cold out.....for a dog. A healthy dog can take the cold weather a lot better then a furless human ;)

Dogs are no different than us. If we are out in the cold too long, we could die of hypothermia. Just because they have 'coats' does not mean they are warm. it is cruel to leave a dog out in the cold for any longer than you or I would stay out in the cold. I hope you are not asking because you leave your dog out. If you know someone else who it, call your local animal control or ASPCA.

A dog can die from staying out in the cold too long. Some breeds are hardier to cold climate and can survive outside but others can die.

I have the medical training to answer this. . . I'm answering not to you specifically, because I don't know why you asked, but to the general dog owner out there.
As a certified tech, I think it's cruel to keep a dog outside all the time in a cold climate. Specifically, dogs suffer just as we do - they are prone to frostbite, frozen toes and ears. I have seen dogs without ear tips and toes - because they froze off. Dogs FREEZE, like humans. Repeated exposure to cold without the opportunity to escape it, encourages arthritis in their joints - a painful condition.
Their bodies must stay warm to function properly like ours do. The idea that dogs because they are dogs are okay outside in any weather is just plain ignorant. We know better than that now - from a scientific standpoint. And we need to behave accordingly.
This is why in most states, it is illegal to keep a dog outside without shelter. State regulations are specific about what a "shelter" must be - it needs to be adequate to keep the animal warm. Also, it's illegal to keep a dog in hot weather with no shelter and water! They must escape the sun - dogs get skin cancers like we do, they suffer from heat stroke, and they become dehydrated and can die of it, like we do.
Moreover, I worry about what it does mentally to a dog. A dog's being tied outside day after day (or night after night) with little human interaction, often becomes aggressive in the end. The same happens with a dog shut out in the cold time after time.
Being a dog owner involves being responsible enough to provide them basic things - food, health care, shelter, and interaction. These things are their birthright as your pet. They deserve these things as much as you do. If you can't provide them, give the pet to someone who will.

Provide a large warm DRY doghouse with straw or other dry ouside dog bedding. Provide plenty of food and water. FUR DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING!!! Outside, your pet is just as vulnerable as you are, and needs proper provisions while he's ouside. Bring the dog in during storms, and snow to prevent colds, and frostbite.

You should never leave your dog exposed to the elements at the very least it should have a dog house even if it is just a roof and 3 walls. Especially if the dog is small or has a thinner coat never leave it out. He could get frost bite, wind burn, or hypothermia he could even die.

depends on what type of dog u have if u have a medium sized dog or bigger then they'll be ok as long as u have a dog house and put some thing in there to help keep them warm. i have to keep my dog outside b/c my parents won't let her in the house. most likely u won't get charged with cruelty unless ur showing tht u don't really care but other wise u shouldn't

What happens to any critter left out in the cold too long. If you say too long, that means one thing. They freeze to death.
