SES light came on and so I brought it to the dealer. They tried scanning it but they told me the ecu was somehow blocked. So now they want $80 to reset it. Anyway I can do this myself? If so, then how? Thanks

usually you can reset it by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for about 15 -30 minutes.

Funny how the dealer couldn't reset the computer for free, but if you gave them $80, they could.

If the SES light is coming on, there is probably a reason. My old Nissan turned it on whenever there was an oil change due, but since it didn't say what the problem was, I brought it to the dealer. I was young and dumb and their little marketing trick worked on me.

I went to Advance Auto Parts and they told me what the code was that made the light come on. I corrected it and then the guy hit a button to clear the code. He said that if I didn't fix the problem correctly, that the light would come right back on.

I think it would be a good idea to bring it to an auto parts store first and trying to get them to turn the light off for you. You know that the ECU isn't an $80 part, so the dealer is screwing around.

Rent a code scanner for OBDII systems from autozone and reset it that way. Its pretty easy and simple to use. An ECU can't be blocked to my knowledge. Rent the scanner and give it a whirl!
