First of all I have been looking at all the stuff about evolution. Lots of evidence there, you must admit. Also, I started reading the bible because I really WANTED to believe, but stopped at the first few pages because it was already sounding like a make believe story, it said Adam lived for 900 years or something ridiculous like that. All of the storys in the bible are pretty fake sounding to me. Why do people blindly believe all that stuff if it can't possibly be real. I mean, science is kind of the proof, I think. How can Adam and Eve really be the first humans if there is fossil evidence that we as humans evolved 150,000 years ago???
What am I if I believe in science and nature. I believe in a higher spirit that created the earth billions of years ago, I think he can hear prayers. I am 50/50 on the whole life after death thing. I also think people who are dead can hear prayers and are watching everything you do. What should I do? Pretend to believe even if I don't?

That's what i'm talking about. "Lost and hellbound" someone said. So quick to believe in that stuff. Why do you believe in Jesus? Because it is what you were always told?

I feel like the most educated people are atheists. I want to believe in something, but I just feel the bible has too many inconsistancies.

FYI, I have read other parts of the bible too. I'm sorry, it just sounds like a bunch of collected short stories to me. How could anyone write down all that stuff. Impossible.

"It was your inability to understand and believe the power of God through his word"...Princess N, that sounds like a load of crap. That is what I am saying about blindly believing in a book. There is no proof, you are just believing in something someone else has told you to believe with no solid proof. I'm going to bed.

1st of all the bible wasn't made up. It was your inability to understand and believe the power of God through his word. If He created the world then how hard would it be to creat humans?
When researching the history of the universe you reach the point of the big bang theaory, it is a theory that says that the Earth formed from an enormous explosion 10-15 billion years ago. However scientist have the unanswered question- What came before the big bang. According to the scientists, when researching the history of the universe it reaches a point where the laws of science do not seem to work. some therefore come to the conclusion that the world was planned and made by a supernatural being. This clearly proves by scientific notation that Jesus eixsted.

The people who wrote the Bible included many stories which were believed by the multitudes because they had been taught such by their older peers.
Man has wondered about his origins since man began to think. Some of them made assumptions which became standard beliefs.
The story of Adam and Eve originated over 3000 years ago and for some reason we still believe that story even though later discoveries indicate that it was quite simplistic and not actually based on any facts.
The various religions were attempts to civilize people.
The Jewish religion was heavy on teaching people certain rituals and practices.
When Jesus came, he taught that all those rituals and practices were not really necessary and that it was important for people to respect, love and help other people.
Muhammad realized his people needed more direction because they were not following the teachings of Jesus properly so he gave them a lot of new rituals and practices to occupy their time and their minds.
The Muslim religion is basically peaceful but not all Muslims are peaceful.
The Christian religion is basically peaceful but not all Christians are peaceful.
And so it goes.

You make good points. You can make a logical argument for the existence of some sort of higher power -- but when you get into the concept of the Christian God and all of the errors and nonsensical things in the Bible, then you run into all sorts of other problems. I'm not sure about the "dead people can hear prayers" thing, but that even makes more sense than a 6,000 year old earth and a 900 year old man, if ya know what I mean.

dont pretend but i think you have some serious praying to do. i know that God is alive and well and that He sent His Son, Jesus to die on the cross for mine and your sins. He also created the heavens and the earth. i know this. i have seen God work in my life in ways that no one or nothing else could do. i also have seen God answer prayers and i feel forgiven after i repent. i can see why the Bible may seem hard to believe but if you give God a chance... He will show you that He is real. And about the evolution thing... first of all scientists are all wierd anyway and they may have some stuff that they call evidence but just think about it... do you honestly believe that you were once a monkey? come on! humans are wayyy... too complex to have "evolved" from anything else. we had to be created by some amazing powerful spirit and that is GOD.

You should never demean yourself be pretending to believe what you don't believe.
You don't have to believe the bible to believe in God. Check out Native American religions, for example.
Personally, I think that the human mind can't really understand God, we can only try to catch an insight here and there. Trying to write about these insights is nearly impossible, we don't have the words for it, so some people have written stories that try to describe the insights. To take such stories litterally is to miss the point. Check out the interviews with Joseph Campbell in The Power Of Myth with Bill Moyers.
May your spiritual journey last all of your life, and beyond.

No, of course you should not pretend to believe. What's the point of that? Are you seeking answers for yourself or are you trying to impress someone else?
This is a very noble question and I thank you for sharing with us. I can tell you this, if you are sincere and you read the Bible and pray and ask God to reveal His truths to you you will find your answers.
Keep this in mind - science is fallible but God is not. We can never know with any certainty how old the earth is. Carbon dating has been proved completely untrustworthy. It is also man-made and therefore fallible. The only thing of any certainty is that there is a God and He cared enough for you in knowing you would be seeking answers to write an instruction book for you. Some of it is hard for our human minds to grasp. That is why a small measure of faith is required.
God bless you on your journey to Him! You are in my prayers!

well it sounds like you believe in something other than science so i would ask you what that thing is either way i am on the opposite end where i have started to doubt the same things you claim not to believe in but if someone can hear prayers and if the dead can hear you how is that if nothing exists after life i don't believe in science i just don;t believe in a fair and just god go figure

Science is not always exact and niether is the age of the earth.
In mean, at one time the best scientists in the world thought the earth was flat!
And that the sun revolved around the earth!
Science has and always will be progressive, like now.. a very large number of scientists believe in creation science instead of evolution. And that carbon dating is not exact anymore like they once thought.
look at some good creation science websites and see what you think, they are very reasonable and not grasping at straws.

This following website will pay you $250,000 if you have any proof of evolution ( its been up for grabs for years now)

. A belief is not reality. The bible is just a book of fiction. so is Jesus so is god. it is totally man made. all religions are new.
humans have be on the planet for tens of thousands of years.
what ever happened to those people when they died is what is going to happen to you and everyone else that will ever live on earth.. but if you like, you can believe what ever you like. you can believe that you die and go to live with Santa Clause or the Tooth fairy. or little munchkins. but ultimately it is all the same.
to answer you question. what are you? why even label your self. you are what you are. and there is nothing wrong with that
