I think one reason is leg room! The very first row of seats in each section had a load of leg room. Plus you dont have to site behind anyone (esp. someone with too much cheap perfume when you have alergies)

But the front of the plane is favorable also because after 1st class, you are the 1st to get off the plane. Being stuck in your seat waiting for the mass of people before you to get their carryon and exit the plane is Not fun!

I would guess less noise. Much nicer, especially with tail mounted engines like the 717, sitting next to those is pretty noisy. However, one possible unintentional benefit could be crash survivability. I remember one study where, under certain circumstances (ruptured fuel tank), that those up front have a better chance of survival because the burning fuel escaping from the wings gets blown backwards towards the cabin, while the front remains relatively flame free. Doesn't help much for smoke inhalation though. Really kind of a morbid thought if you think about it, but interesting nonetheless.

If you mean other than first class, then some reasons would be:
1. At the end of the flight, you wouldn't have to wait long to get off.
2. The ride is a little better in turbulence.
3. You are typically further from the engines and so less noise.

The world may never know! but i got an idea. LOL. when sitting in the front of the airplane you are forward of the CG (center of gravity) It is as simple as explaining a see-saw. The center directly between the two ends (the bar in the center it rests upon) receives the less up and down movement.
If you are on the end of a see-saw you are thrown up and down.
The same goes for a jet, you are riding a see-saw with the center bar (or CG) in the middle of the jet.
You will receive less up and down movement the closer you sit to the middle or front of a jet.

Yes, there is much less noise towards the front of the plane than at the back.

If you sit anywhere in front of the engines, you will hear the actual noise of the engine which sounds really cool.

But, if you sit anywhere behind the engine, all you hear is a very loud fuel burning noise kinda like tv static except really loud and it sucks.

It is less corwded and usually the amenities are better than the economy class. However if it's a long fuselage aircraft and if it has flight control rigging issues, sitting in front could make you suffer of nausea or air sickness because of Dutch Roll effect.

people prefer the front because of the loud engine noise in the back...not sure if thats a problem with today's airplanes

also it might be for similar reasons why people sit in the front of class

Because you spend the least amount of time sitting - you're the last on and the first off. At least thats why I always sit at the front (I'm a frequent flyer).

First class cabin. Much nicer service, more comfortable, free booze, and I don't have to wait for dozens of others to gather their gear to exit the aircraft.

I think you feel the take off and landing a little less from the front seats than the back.
