depends on which transmission is in it. the dipstick handle should say on the end of the handle either "Mercon" or "Mercon V". Mercon is just your regular Dexron III trans fluid off the shelf. Mercon V is a ford trans fluid. you can still buy it off the shelf, just make sure it is the right one. if it takes Mercon V, it needs those particular additives for that trans to run correctly.

If you have the auto (4R70W), The proper fluid is Mercon V. Your best bet is to get Motorcraft Mercon V from the dealer. I had a 99 GT auto that was built from end to end and ran 10s all day on that transmission with Factory recommended Mercon V. When it comes to transmission fluid for my personal cars or my customers, I either use Amsoil ATF or ATF from the dealer. The newer electronically controlled transmissions are much more sensitive to fluids than in the past and the transmission repairs are much more expensive. Go to your local Ford dealer and purchase Motorcraft Mercon V and end your worries. I think for the 5 speed manuals, many people used GM Synchromesh, but I'm not 100% certain.
