I was paddled once in high school. It sucked! I was suspended twelve times, because they took the paddle away. That was awesome;more like a paid vacation.
I think the paddle was more than a symbol of fear. It was a symbol of who was REALLY in charge. When the power to punish was taken away from the educators, the power to act like fools was put into the hands of the children.
This country really has gone to hell in a hand basket and it saddens me. If my child were to come home in the back of a police car, you can bet your paycheck his butt would be burning til next year. Everything has been turned bassackwards by the politically correct morons of the world.

When i was a kid going to school the paddle was used quite often. If you got into trouble in class , tardy or mouthed off you were sent to the hallway or to the Principal's office .You would be lectured by the Principal and he would decide your fate. If a paddling was decided you be told to bend over and grabb your ankles usually or at times bend over the desk . The Principal would then proceed to paddle you depending on the offense 3 to 6 swats were given and some repeat offenders got up top 10. The boys got paddled more than the girls. There was alot more respect for teachers and classmates back then as well as control in the classroom and not all the disruptions like today and you learned to be accountable for misbehaving. Oh yes; you were well behaved after a paddling and in no hurry for another!

The problem is that people have changed. Used to be that children were paddled, a few minor swats, at school and it served as a wake-up call. And as most people were normal, this wake-up call was all they needed to get back on the right road. But today, even young people, many folks are just incorrigible. They have no sense of right or wrong nor do they feel any guilt or remorse about anything. You can't paddle decency into people.

You all have valid points but i disagree with paddles in school teachers are there to instruct our children not hit them or abuse them, besides you dont know how paddle happy some teachers were or could be. The issue with our children these days are parents not being around enough to teach them right and wrong
i live by 3 schools and everyday at 2 o clock they all get out of school and they walk by my house and they use the most vulgar language you could imagin, 10 year olds talking like they are 20 and 14 year olds bragging about recieving sexual favors from 12 and 13 year old girls. its truly sickining. But that isnt becauise of the "village" not being there its from the parents not being there. In todays society both parents work to make the bills. 1 person income is just becoming more and more rare. and back in the day the mom used to stay at home and raise the kids, now shes working with dad, so when do the kids get time? Time with dad? with mom? Not much at all, and thats what kids these days are so messed up in so many ways. no one teaches them the basics of life anymore so they learn it on tv and from friends.

taking the paddle away is a failure not because it didn't need taking away but because nothing else was put in instead
suspending a child from school - be naughty and get a few days off - is hardly a punishment and can vary according to what family they come from
however if you talk to older people you wont have to go very far before finding instances of abuse where someone was paddled for the heinous crime of not understanding their work or minor misdemeanors like 'not putting your hand up before talking' and stuff like that
i think the answer isn't about going back in time to the 'good old days' (heck i WAS there and they really weren't all that!) but in addressing the issue of CONSEQUENCES for bad behaviour. here in the UK 14yos are allowed to roam around in gangs late at night harassing people and breaking into cars - the police say there is little they can do other than escort them back to their often irresponsible parents - in the USA 14yos can be tried as adults for example and i bet they don't have the yob problems that are very common in the UK (in and out of school!)

I am sorry but i think that i am a minority here tonight. I agree with only one woman on here who said that she would not want anyone paddling her kid. I would not either, i think that the school has no right what so ever to touch my child in anyway. They yell about parents abusing their children i don't want some high and mighty principal on a power trip touching my child in any way, let alone spanking or paddling them. There are much better ways to discipline a child and besides anyone with half a brain knows that 90% of kids who get into trouble repeatedly are only doing it because they are craving attention. Negative attention is better than no attention. I when to school in the 80's and i have never ever in my entire school career seen a paddle hanging anywhere and i don't know any parent who would put up with one in their school.

I agree, I know that if the principal in my school would of been able to spank me then I would of been much better behaved. All I ever got was suspended for the day, but my mother never found out about it cause I still went home at the same time. I just wanted out of school anyways, so it worked for me and I just did it again and again.

I don't think taking the paddle out of the education system has anything to do with how out of controll youth is today. I think it has more to do with the fact that most families have been forced to become double income families in society today.
Nowadays, most children are not being raised by their parents primarily but by daycare teachers, school teacher, nanies, etc. I think the youth of today is screaming for attention from their parents and a solid family base. Unfortunately today life has become overly expensive and most homes require both Mother and Father to produce a liveable income.

We were not paddled, we were jugged.
Had to kneel on floor with arms in air anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, sometimes for several days in a row.
I think paddling wouldhave been better.
But I do agree, the schools need a more effective form of punishment. Suspending a kid for a few days seems like a reward not a punishment.

I guess I still live in the backwoods of the country, because we still have paddles in the schools. Of course, they have to ask parents permission, but it is still used.
And I don't agree that it is all the parents fault when a kid acts up. Just like I don't always agree that it was the parents fault when a teenager gets pregnant. My parents were loving, set down rules, gave out punishments, didn't just let us run wild, and my brother still got his girlfriend in high school pregnant. It had nothing to do with how good or bad my parents were, in their parenting skills.
