I have a lot of favorite quotes, but I recently found this one, which is particularly relevant to me because I am going to be a teacher.

"I have come to a frightening conclusion.
I am the decisive element in the classroom.
It is my personal approach that creates the climate.
It is my daily mood that makes the weather.
As a teacher I possess tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous.
I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.
I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.
In all situations it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated, and a child humanized or de-humanized"

--Chaim Ginott

I'll give you three--
1) Will Rogers--There is no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.

2) H. L. Mencken--Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

3) Groucho Marx--Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read.

I use this with my 8th grade students when they want to quit and be spoon fed answers. They say things like, "I don't get it, I can't do it."

My response: "Fake it until you make it!"
