I'm semi-new to veganism (no meat, dairy, or eggs) and lately i have been getting pretty bad heartburn... i don't expect it's because of the diet change, but it's possible.. i don't even know what causes heartburn.. am i missing something?

You have probably upped your intake of carbohydrates (breads, pasta, etc.), and in some people that can cause severe heartburn. Also, you may be eating more legumes, and that can cause digestive upsets.

You sound younger, so if you want to continue on this diet -- it's not for every body type -- then I suggest to take a few Tums when you are hit with the heartburn (which is actually acid indigestion, and can lead to acid reflux disease). I know it's probably not what you want to do, however, it does sound like your body is reacting to the foods you're eating now that have replaced what you ate before.

(I actually have experienced heartburn with too many carbohydrates, especially bread and pastas, and found that drinking orange juice or some citrus juice -- lemon in the water, etc. -- often modified the "heartburn.")

A macrobiotic diet is almost a vegan diet, however, it does incorporate a little fish or poultry (but no dairy or eggs) now and then, and that helps. Plus many macrobiotic menus are extremely creative (99% of the menus don't have any fish or poultry) and delicious, so you may want to check at Amazon.com for some titles under macrobiotic cookbooks and try some out. If you don't want animal products, at least try some macrobiotic menus to get an idea of how to combine all the foods you're eating -- the combination of foods can interact in your digestive tract the wrong way and also cause heartburn.

Keep a meal log and write down what you eat each meal, and have a column for heartburn -- see which meals bring it on more. That should help to narrow it down. And if worse comes to worse, maybe add in some of the foods you had eliminated, and see if that reduces it or gets rid of it -- you just may be one of those people who needs more animal products in their diet.

Good luck to you!

I had mild heartburn at the very beginning of my pregnancy, like around 5 or 6 weeks. Now I'm 32 weeks and getting it again. It was definitely an early sign for me!

wisteria gives you an awfully thorough and excellent answer. i agree with her.

you MIGHT be getting acid indigestion from medicines that you take. if you take prescriptive medicine, oftentimes the pharmacist is the best person to call to ask if any of them tend to cause it. if so, call your doctor to ask if you should also take something daily, like pepsid. but onwards to how i agree and disagree a little bit with wisteria's very good advice:

my own stance is just a bit different. it seems that people eating many vegatables have a hard time digesting them and get acid indigestion from them. there's this over the counter pill called beano. a lot of veggies like them. they prevent gas, which is what causes acid indigestion in the long run.

i also agree that tums is just a fantastic antacid! i prefer tums over any other because it has the most digestible form of calcium that you can find anywhere.

calcium from milk and other foods is mainly absorbed by bodies only between the ages of 0 - 20. after 20, you really can't absolb calcium. and so, if you did not drink milk, more milk, and even more and more milk religiously like i did when i was a kid, you may eventually develop osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. if you take calcium in tums, it is more absorbed by the adult body than any other form. you just do not get it from even prescribed calcium tablets. it is the hardest mineral for adults to digest into usable form.

you do not want to get acid reflux disease, so try to prevent that now. you may get that from not doing anything about acid indigestion.

Are you drinking coffee? I am vegetarian and coffee kills me. Sad that I had to give up all my favorites - ice cream and chocolate milk - but then coffee, too. And I didn't get heartburn from coffee until I stopped eating meat and milk products. Hope you feel better. Stick with it!!

well actually, i think vegetarians are more likely to get acid reflux, or in other words, heartburn. Because they usually tend to eat more pastas, and stuff like that. and we all know that milk (which is dairy) helps coat your throat, and it can help prevent, or minimize heartburn. it like helps your esophagus. our body's were made to have meat, and dairy, and eggs. so im guessing that your diet, yes indeed is the reason why you started getting heartburn.

Heart burn is caused by the esophagus opening into the stomach not closing properly. This is caused by spicy food or allergic reaction. You should go see a doctor if it bothers you a lot.

It's probably due to the diet change. Try over the counter pepcid/prilosec. If that doesn't control it, you need to see the doc for a stronger prescription.

could be caused from high acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.
