Like most people, my limbs occasionally get trapped in weird positions in sleep. But this morning, my arm was so asleep that I couldn't lift it past my chest and I was completely incapable of clenching my fist. It wasn't just no feeling in my arm, but no matter how hard I tried my hand just sat limply. How did I cause this to happen? Does anyone know the physical means behind it?

Compression of the neurovascular structures (the nerves and blood vessels) that supply the arm would lead to the symptoms. If it does not happen at any other time it was probably just your weird sleeping posture. Do you notice if you do activities with your arms above your head for more than a couple of minutes you have feelings of tingling, numbness, heaviness and/or cold. This could also be due to a compression of those same structures and could occur for several different reasons (posture, muscle tightness, elevated 1st rib, etc.). I would ask for a referral to a Physical Therapist who would be able to examine you and tell you if your symptoms are being caused due to an orthopedic reason such as the ones that I lifted above.
