Great question. I think you're right.

e-mail doesn't make communication any faster, or more interactive.

Manners used to be taught at home, by the mother, while the father worked.

Shall we go back to our traditional roots?

Manners and communication are horrible these days. I don't blame technology, I blame the expections of the Consumers. It seems that people want everyone to be nice and friendly however the person after them always seems to feel they are taking to long. I recently had to cash a check at Bank of the West and was shocked to actually be greeted on the telephone by an actual person. Try calling Bank of America or Cingular. My God I think they have classes on just how you can ruin someone's day. You got o most Walmart's, Von's, Safeway etc. and people are nearly pushing you into aisles to get through. It's horrible. This is why I like to shop in the morning hours like 7-9a.m. when most people don't shop. Everyone seems to be nicer including the employees. I think Customer Service is horrible these days though and people in general in our neck of the woods seem like it would make them bleed if they were to smile and say excuse me or good morning. '-)

Communication skills are as good as ever. People are simply adapting to new genres of communication. New genres call for new forms of communication.

As far as manners, I suppose that politeness is in the eye of the beholder.

I think it is. It's a shame too, because you can watch those great old black and white movies and the men are so gallant and well spoken. The women are all so lady-like. It is very appealing to me. Good Luck!!!

I think so.

It is horrible when someone IMs you to break-up your boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. Say it to their face, or at LEAST call on the phone.

When you don't have to stand and face the person, respect and courtesy quickly become causalities.
