i think the ones who say I don't want to offend anybody are the funny ones because they then immediately offend people.

I think you're right. But also, there are a couple different ways you can ask a question on here. Take the question "Where's the proof for God?" You can mean that in a sarcastic way if you're looking to attack Christians, or you can mean it in an honest way if you seriously want to know what proof exists. In the latter case, people usually want to make it clear that they're seriously asking an honest question and aren't meaning it a negative or insulting way.

I think some people are looking for honest answers, without intending to offend by asking the question.
Obviously, nobody can expect to not cause offence with anyone ever....but to intend no disrespect should be allowed.

People fall all over themselves to preempt anything they say with "now don't take offense" or "I don't mean for this to come out rude".
It's a way to buffer. It's a way to provide a misleading disclaimer. They actually might be asking something grossly offensive, but if someone gets uppity about it, they can always fall back on "well I TOLD YOU I didn't mean it like that... you're taking it the wrong way!!"

The #1 problem with religion is that people are not respectful of others who think differently then they do. So people on Y!A who ask "please be nice" are probably just trying to avoid these kinds of folks.
Sad, isn't it?

used to be that the defence for bein rude was freedom of speech but then if you just ask them not to reply the freedom of speech reason becomes mute because it is no longer a requested answer.

It's because we unfortunately have become all too accustomed to being slammed for everything we say here by someone or another.
I wish this were not so.

I'd rather be an asshole. At least I'm being honest with myself.
