I mean if God has a grand and predetermined plan, why should we bother praying?

Because within Gods plan he has given room for our actions. ie we can choose to believe in God or reject him. Elijah prayed and he stopped it from raining.

Prayer is the method we use to communicate to God.

God is not held by time, His predetermined plan was made because He has seen our lives and how they have played out. Our prayers help shape what we receive in our lives, He wants us to ask Him requests. What greater gift could a father have than to grant His child's request, but only if it is in His plan for our lives. Our lives are part of a great novel, we are the characters, and prayer helps our author shape our lives and situations.

People pray for differnt reasons. Some pray because others are watching. Some pray out of a genuine concern for their petition. Some pray out of a sense of obedience. Mostly, if we really believe in a God who in omnipotent (all knowing), and that omnipotent God knows wahat we need even before we know we need it, than we are really praying to comfort ourselves.

I believe that God has spent the ages seeking to communicate to creation through the Bible, through Jesus, through the actions of the Holy Spirit. It is God's desire to be in communion with us. Ultimately we pray so that we can also be in communion with God.

They shouldn't.

1) There is no God.

2) Even if the Christian God did exist, you'd be right. There'd be no point as this God is supposed to have an unalterable plan. So...

Why bother?

Those that love God seek him. The same as you would call anyone you love. God also likes an invitation into whatever situation that you might seek him in prayer.
