We came home last night to our 10 month old 6lb yorkie-poo chewing on some pieces of potpourri he found on our coffee table. He was in good spirits last night, but we woke up to find that he had thrown up several times during the night, and it has continued all day today. He seems fairly sick, and will only drink water out of my hand. We called the vet today and they said that they would just induce vomitting, and as he was already doing so, we haven't taken him in. I am worried because he is not his normal self, and will not touch his food. Any words of wisdom?

I would definitely take him to the vet but in the mean time try feeding him some unflavored yogurt or cottage cheese. It will coat his stomach and dogs love the taste. You can mix it in with his dog food or feed it by itself. Pedialyte is also great to keep him hydrated.

It's amazing what pups will eat... When my dog was a pup, he at the cover off a baseball. We didn't know untill he started hacking and he coughed up the cover intact. I couldn't believe that much went down his gullet.

For your pup, you should take him in. Potpourri has bits of pine cones, wood shavings and dried flowers. It's best to make sure nothing got lodged in his intestine. If he poops potpourri, you can have more confidence that the stuff is passing through his system... No joke intended.

There are many reasons why he may not be eating... the less worrisome is that he ate so much potpourri that he's full.

Best of luck to your pup.

I would look up what was in the potpourri, i would think rose petals would be toxic but i just found a recipe for rose petal jam so it must not be (http://earthnotes.tripod.com/rose_h.htm). If he has been fine so far I would say he will be ok as long as there wasn't something big in the potpourri that could cause a blockage. If that is the case I would get him checked out.

According to Petshealth Care Plan by Hartville Group, potpourri is harmful to pets and can cause serious illness or even death. Its in their pamphlet of 101 Things You Didnt Know Could Harm Your Pet...I'd call the vet again.

Well, see, the thing is, people in other countries don't see any problems with eating dog meat. For them, it's just another type of food and a different source of nutrition. In the U.S., it is not uncommon to eat meat from a cow. However, in India, this is frowned upon because cows are a major part of culture to Hindus. It's the same with dogs; dogs are huge in America. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but they should respect the view of another. So I agree, it is okay to eat a dog.

I would take him in to your vet or another vet. There may be parts of the potpourri that he cannot digest, or some of it may be poisonous to him. I would take him to the vet and have them induce vomiting and watch him closely for 24 hours and see if he is okay.

Watch him really carefully. Make sure he's drinking plenty of water, small dogs get dehydrated fast. You could even try giving him some pedialyte. My vet told me to give some to my little girl when she was sick. You could try giving him some boiled chicken/boiled ground beef and rice. It's bland and is easy on their tummys. Don't hesitate to take him in if you feel like anything is wrong.

Call the Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 and explain the situation to them. They will know what to do. If you don't see improvement, go to the vet.
